At 18, he joined the U.S. Army. He served from 1948 to 1952 in Fritzlar, Germany, in the U.S. Constabulary. It was an elite branch of the Army as the 1st Infantry Division formed as the first line of defense to communism in Germany and Austria. The U.S. Constabulary was only in operation from 1946 to 1952.
When honorably discharged, he returned to Donna, Texas where he met Lala. They married in 1954 and moved to Chicago so he could study full time. After graduation they moved to CA where Phil had a job waiting for him at Lockheed, working on the Polaris Space Missile.
In his career, he went from Lockheed to Philco to IBM, where he retired in 1987.
Once retired they moved to Twain Harte, CA, where they joined many clubs and made new friends. But volunteering came naturally and they joined Interfaith, where they served for many years.
They traveled extensively, making many trips to Texas & Kansas and cross country. One of their most exciting trips was to Europe. They traveled to England, Brussels, Luxembourg, France, Italy and Germany.
In Germany they visited Phil’s old post in Fritzlar, where he was given a hero’s welcome for his service in the Constabulary.
Travel slowed down after a while, but Phil always kept in touch. He made 2 or 3 phone calls a day just to say “hi”.
Phil spent over 60 years with Lala and lived life to the fullest. He impacted many lives, was loved by many and will be missed by everyone.
