I remember those days, which were many, Harold and I would visit Grace at her family’s strawberry farm(in the 50’s). We would sit around the kitchen table or in the front yard of their humble home & chat for hours. We all found some comfort talking about our situation. We were like many Japanese American kids trying to find  our place in this society.
Our parents were broke, worn out & just plain tired. Nearly four years of incarceration had done it’s job. They were just a shell of the people who entered those camps.
However, youth is resilient as I found out. One day Harold showed up at my house with a brand new-second hand white Mercury convertible. Boy, what a beauty!! “Hey Fred, lets go to see some girls!”  Of course I knew exactly where we were going—to Grace’s house!! We had lots of fun with that car & formed a lasting friendship.  We will miss Grace.  Molly & I will always remember her sweet smile & the many times she said to us “I love you guys”.     “  WE LOVE YOU TOO”, GRACE !

Grace and I shared grandsons but even more. When I visited we would spend hours talking about our lives. We would go out for lunch and take walks. Grace was totally a family person. I will miss her lovely notes with the Christmas card she sent each year. Grace will always be remembered.
