He is survived by wife, Marie (Stamper), daughter Tammra, son Greg (Linda Lee) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Walter, Mary, Robert, Willie Mae, Alga, James “JS” (Emma), Eddie and mother-in-law, Novella Waters.
In the mid 40’s, Jimmie met Marie, “the pretty girl from the soda shop”. In 1948, with few prospects, for a young man of color, he asked his dad for permission to join the Air Force. He had a successful career working for General E.K. Warburton, during the Korean War.
Jimmie continued his AF career in many locations. Jimmie and Marie were transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Alaska, where they welcomed Tammra. They then moved to Milwaukee, WI, for one year. It was enough time for Greg to be born; and to join the Wisconsin based Lutheran Church. His final post was Edwards AFB in California.
Unfortunately, after 20 years of service, with accounting experience, prospects for a young, decorated soldier of color, were still not plentiful; so, he earned a degree from San Jose State, and went on to have a 20-year career at Lockheed Missile and Space.
The family had a beautiful life together, wrapped in faith. They were long time members of Mt. Calvery Lutheran Church. After its closing, Apostles Luthern Church became their new home. Over the years, many pastors and parishioners enriched their lives.
Jimmie could BBQ a mean rib and baked some noteworthy rolls and pies. He was also a member of bowling leagues, enjoyed golfing, attended numerous concerts and loved travelling the world.
At age 90, Jimmie wrote his memoir. He could have dwelled on his life challenges, but instead he focused on the riches of his life. One final quote was “God has been good to me – for that, I give thanks”.
Services to be held Saturday, April 18, 10:30 AM at Apostles Lutheran Church, 5828 Santa Teresa Blvd. For more information [email protected].
