Discipline and Compassion

My Dad was a believer in spare the rod, spoil the child.  But it was a different-maybe better time back then. 
Those of you that knew our family way back when probably remember me as being kind of a wild kid, not mean spirited but the kind of kid who just couldn't sit still too long and not one to always consider the big picture.

On the rare occasion that my Mom would reach her generous limit and I would be at the peak of mine. She would tell me “Go to Your Room and Wait till your Father gets home” those were scary times, but there were also times that my Mom would feel sorry for me and not tell my Dad.
  
But When My Parents did think I could use some correction. My Dad would come into the room ask me what I had done. I would give him my version, then he would tell me why I wasn't supposed to be doing what I was doing and then I'd get a spanking.  I would cry like I was mortally wounded, while thinking of what I could use for more protection.

More often than not, after it was all over. My father would come into my room before bedtime and ask me if I would kneel down with him at the side of my bed to pray. He'd lead both of us in prayer and ask God with tears in his eyes to help me be a good boy and then he would ask God to help him be a good father. He would then hug me and tell me how much he loved me and ask me to be good boy so he wouldn't have to spank me. And I would hug him back and tell him I loved him and tell him that I would be a good boy, and I would mean it… But it was hard…

That kid turned out to be a reckless teenager, who never got much smarter…
  
It wasn't till I got out of the Marine Corps that I realized that there are people out there that really don't' know or were never taught the difference between right and wrong.   I did thank my Father for teaching me the difference... But I was still too bullheaded, young and thought I “Knew Everything”… I was clueless as to how much I needed to learn to become a self-reliant young man.
  
It was only when I started getting older, that my Dad seemed to be getting smarter and I was able to appreciate what he had been showing me all my life… and I was finally able to reciprocate what he had been offering me all these years.
 
We bonded well. We were a lot more alike than I would have ever thought.  And I began a friendship with a man that I loved and respected.
 
It was easy to love him because he was my father and for all that he had done for us…    I've always loved him. 

But he earned my respect by how he lived his life. 

He showed me in so many unspoken ways how to be a good man.

By how he gave his time to be of service to his church, his friends and even strangers, by his dedication to his wife and children. 

He showed me, by how he loved and cared for his grandchildren and all those around him. 

He showed me humility. He never had to be out front; He could sit in the background or off to the side to watching over us, but always there to provide help and guidance when needed. 

He showed me that If it's the right thing to do, that sometimes you have to take a stand even if it's against popular opinion. 
  
He showed me to take pride in the work that you do. He was always a hard worker who cared about whatever he was working on and whoever he was working with, he was always working on his house to make it nicer for my Mom.

He showed me patience, because in all those years of me running. He never shut the door on me…

He showed me unconditional love, but the kind with your eyes wide open, and that has to be the hardest kind of all, he did that for years on end.
 
My Father was a good man who I loved and respected.     
He became my friend.
  
As Life slowly ebbed away at his health, We lost our ability to communicate with each other like we had in the past. That was a hard loss.

It breaks my heart to let him go, 
but I know when I see him again,
 
We will once again be able to Talk…

And he will be restored to the man that he truly was, Full of Love, Wisdom, Compassion, Strength and Laughter.

God bless Mr.Montiel and his family during this time. I have nothing but fond, warm, loving memories of him and his family. He is everything that has been written about him...Godly, warm, kind, loving, all about his family, hard working, compassionate., etc... I don't think he ever met a stranger. He is now w/Jesus, whole and healed. Please know his entire family is in my thoughts and prayers.
