Antonio came to the United States first and Filamena followed. Filamena, who was pregnant when she left Madeira, Portugal to join her husband, arrived in the United States on January 28, 1933 with her 1-year old daughter Julia and a mid-wife to assist with the pregnancy. Two days later, Lucinda (Lucy) was born in New Bedford, MA on January 30, 1933. In 1945, the family moved from New Bedford, MA to Santa Clara, CA. Lucy has one older sister named Julia Amaral. Lucy attended Santa Clara High School, performed Portuguese Folklore dancing, and worked as a waitress.
On April 20, 1952, Lucy married Joseph Souza (deceased) at St. Clair’s Catholic Church in Santa Clara, CA. Joe owned and operated Stanley Jewelers in San Jose and Lucy would greet and assist customers. They have 5 children, Linda Avila (Rui), Patricia Buchanan (Robert), Joe Souza Jr. (Peggy), Dolores Hernandez, and Debra Morales, 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Later in life, Lucy married Manuel Dutra (deceased) on September 2, 2016. Lucy and Manuel enjoyed going to Portuguese events, watching the entertainment, and dancing – especially the dancing. Lucy also enjoyed going on long rides to places such as Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz either in a car or in their motor home.
