

Manuel was born on October 24, 1936 in Cedres, Faial, Azores to Manuel Furtado Dutra and Maria Amelia Garcia Dutra. As a young adult, Manuel served in the Portuguese military from 1957 to 1959.
In 1958, the Island of Faial had massive volcanic erruptions. In 1959, Manuel, along with his parents and brother Antonio immigranted to the United States and lived in Gridley, CA. Several years later, the family moved and settled in San Jose, CA.
Manuel worked for California Cheese and later began working at O'Connor Hospital. At O'Connor Hospital, he was a long time employee who enjoyed working as a gardener and maintenance worker. He retired from O'Connor Hospital after 30 years of service. After retiring, Manuel was honored in becoming a U.S. Citizen on September 22, 2004.
On September 2, 2016, Manuel married Lucinda Souza. He has 5 step-children, a grandfather of 16, great-grandfather of 24, and the uncle of several nephews and nieces.
Manuel was a quiet man and was always assisting anyone who needed help. He raised his grandson Jose Torres and great granddaughter Alyssa Torres as his own. He was thankful for the love and care given by step-daughter Debra Morales.
He was a man who enjoyed going with his wife to Portuguese functions and enjoyed the Portugese food, entertainment and dancing - especially the dancing. He also enjoyed going on long rides in the car to places such as Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz - viewing the scenary that surrounded him.
He was involved in numerous organizations to include the IES Society, Nova Alianca, Alianca Jorgence of San Jose, SES Corporation, Sociedade Filarmonica Portuguesa, Brotherhood of St. Anthony, Lady of Fatima, Sport Club Maritimo of Santa Clara, IFES Society and SFV Lodge of Mt. View.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Willow Glen Funeral Home, located at 1039 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose, CA from 2 - 5 PM. Visitation will continue at the Five Wounds Catholic Church, located at 1375 E. Santa Clara Street, San Jose., CA. from 6-7 PM followed by Rosary and Mass . On Thursday, May 4, 2017, final viewing at 10:00 AM at the Willow Glen Funeral Home with Graveside Service at Calvary Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
