I got to know Mikael while hosting the open mic at the Blue Rock Shoot cafe in Saratoga. His musicianship, rich voice and beautifully crafted songs were memorable. More than that, he had such as great sense of humor and was so easy going. 

When I finished building a small recording studio in Campbell in 2005, our recording engineer and myself decided that Mike's music would be the perfect way to baptize the space. We spent several evenings laying down first, Mike's piano playing on my Yamaha U1 upright in the yellow 'live' room. Next, we had Mike in the padded  iso booth to add the vocal tracks. The three of us had such a great time doing the tracking of these 8 or so songs and got to know each other pretty well.

Our sound engineer had difficulty with the recordings, trying to eliminate some (phasing)  issues with the piano tracks. I was useless in trying to help him. I remember him spending a month or more in the evenings trying to get it right. In the end, he finished the project, but was never completely satisfied with the result. Mike knew that and I'm not sure whatever happened after that. 

I moved to the Big Island in 2013. I was saddened to hear of Mikael's passing. I can only imagine how dear he was to all of his family, friends, students and colleagues. It has been over five years now, and I am wondering who has heard Mikael's music and who would be interested in sharing it? I have copies of them that I listen to every so often and really enjoy them. I can only imagine what they would mean to his family and friends. I actually learned one of his songs called, "Who Do I" on the piano. There's no substitute for the big guy, that's for sure.

I just learned about Mike's passing. I knew him through his best friend Mike. I only met him a few times but it was clear just how fun and positive he was. I can only imagine the hole his passing has left in the lives of his friends, family, and students. I know his spirit will live on in his daughters, and I am just so, so sorry for your loss.

My thoughts and prayers for you and your family ... May Mikael strengthen you each day going forward.
