Rene Magdayao Yson

He was born on September 25, 1938 to Delfin Yson and Candelaria Magdayao of Bugasong , Antique, Philippines.

He is survived by his children, Judy, Joyce, Ryan and Karen as well as their spouses Rey, Ogie, Rizza Mae and Bobin, his grandchildren Jude Tyler Yson and Rachelle Adrienne Marie and his sister Lily Yson Moriño.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 55 years, Rachel Girado Yson on July 28, 2017. He would often say that life has been very lonesome since the passing of his wife.

He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree major in English from the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City, Philippines. In 1962, he begun his teaching career as a high school English teacher in St. Anthony’s School in Barbaza, Antique, Philippines. In 1964, he started teaching in Antique Vocational School in his hometown of Bugasong where he later on became a college instructor. After 37 years of teaching, he retired in 1999. In 2001, he immigrated to the United States with his wife to join their daughters, Judy & Joyce who were already residents of San Jose, California at that time.

A consummate English major, he was known to be a prolific writer and an authority in the English language. He was often approached to write speeches and oratorical pieces. He also was a poet in his own right. He also led the rebirth of the student publication during his teaching years. He was a voracious reader.

The true educator that he was, he encouraged his children to strive for excellence in whatever they do.

He was oftentimes heard repeating this quote:

“ There is no cure for birth nor death; save to enjoy the interval”.

Indeed, what an “interval” he has had in his 85 years of dignified existence.

A visitation for Rene will be held Sunday, March 3, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Willow Glen Funeral Home, 1039 Lincoln Ave, San Jose, CA 95125. A visitation will occur Monday, March 4, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, 1039 Lincoln Ave, San Jose, CA 95125. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Leo the Great Church, 88 Race St, San Jose, CA 95126.
