Von was born Carroll Chihiro Miyasaki on April 4th, 1926, in Santa Clara to the late Toshikatsu and Setsu Miyasaki. He spent all of his early life in Santa Clara, except for the four years he lived in the camps at Tule Lake.
He married Arline Mitsunaga on October 25, 1959. The two met in Japantown at what is now known as Roy’s Station. Von worked at what used to be a Mobil gas station for his best friend, Roy Murotsune, and Arline worked as an accountant next door. They had three daughters: Shelley, Cara, and Darcy.
Von worked various jobs over the years, sometimes multiple at once. His jobs included working at the Mobil gas station with Roy, at Pan Am as an airplane repairman, as a gardener, and as a landscaping crewman, turned supervisor, for the City of San Jose. At the age of 55, he retired.
During retirement, Von enjoyed staying active. He walked the track across the street from his house, biked, and tended his garden daily. To relax, Von enjoyed rooting for the Giants, Warriors, and 49ers, mostly from his couch. He also took ballroom dance lessons with his wife and spent nights at dance events. Above all, Von loved spending time with his family. He routinely took his family out for dinners to celebrate birthdays and spend time together.
Von is survived by his loving wife, Arline; sister, Asako; daughters, Shelley, Cara, and Darcy; son-in-laws, Kevin and Greg; and grandchildren, Casey, Madison, and Kelsey.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kizuku, and his son-in-law, Darryl.
Von will be remembered for his kindness and willingness to help others. He was known as the patriarch of the family and will be deeply missed.
Von’s memorial service was held for close family on March 29th, 2025, at the San Jose Betsuin Church.
