Ông Ơi was very private and kept to himself yet he was friendly. Ông Ơi didn’t hold or come to social gatherings but he’d  cordially greet every single person he saw with a wide contagious smile: “hello” or “good morning”. 
That’s  Ông Ơi.

Ông Ơi was simple yet intellectual.  He didn’t drive expensive cars or possess fancy belongings. He walked. He wore plain clothes. But he treasured old photos and family mementos. He kept every trinket that was ever given him.  He loved to read & always strived to self improve. His room was full of books from politics to science to photography and shop manuals .  You’d know he read those books because you can find his handwritten notes throughout the pages in every book and more handwritten notes and sketches in notebooks.
That’s  Ông Ơi.

Ông Ơi was genuinely kind & generous. He’d send what he can to each & every organization that ever appealed to him.  
Ông Ơi was not pretentious. He was honorable & selfless. He didn’t demand and he never complained even when suffering. 
That’s  Ông Ơi.

Ông Ơi was a hard working family man.  He was a devoted husband who knew no other women but his wife, Bà Ơi. He was a stern yet gentle & responsible father who instilled in his children how important an education is. And what a loving playful grandpa he was!
That’s  Ông Ơi.

Bố tôi là một người đàn ông mẫu mực nhưng rất nóng tính & khó tính.  Yêu và giận biểu hiện một cách thật mạnh mẽ trong cá tính của bố tôi. Tôi thương yêu ông nhưng cũng sợ hãi ông không ít.  Ông lúc nào cũng răn dạy chúng tôi học vấn là trên hết.  Học học học & không được ham chơi, lúc thành tài rồi thì tha hồ ăn chơi chưa muộn. Tôi vẫn nghĩ, muộn rồi chớ bố nhưng có dám nói đâu! 

Bố tôi hay lắm, đối sử rất công bằng với tất cả con cái.  Đứa nào cũng cảm thấy mình được cưng nhất trong cái hay, giỏi riêng của mình.
Đây là kỹ niệm của tôi & bố để cảm thấy mình cũng là con gái cưng mặc dù mình ở giữa (middle child)
Tôi học rất giỏi lúc nhỏ nên thường được khen nhiều.  Mỗi lần khách khứa hay bạn bè tới chơi là ông lại đem cái brief case của ông mở ra và khoe cả chồng bằng khen đứng nhất của tôi, lúc đó tôi vừa xấu hỗ nhưng cũng rất là hãnh diện. 
Khen đó nhưng hư thì vẫn bị phạt như thường. 
Có lần tôi lén đọc truyện đã bị cuốn sách xé làm đôi & một tay áo bị xé đi một nữa.  Một lần khác năm lớp 2 ham nói chuyện trong lớp bị cô giáo phê xấu trong học bạ của tháng đó, đã bị bố tôi xé đi học bạ.  Ông thường nói phải “tề” đi thì mới thành công trong cuộc đời được.  Đó là sự công bằng của bố tôi.  Không cần biết đứa nào lúc khen thì thật tuyệt vời những lúc hư thì đừng hòng chạy thoát.

Có lẽ cái học hỏi nhiều nhất ở bố là cách sống và cư sử với mọi người.  Ăn để mà sống cho không phải sống để mà ăn.  Nhường nhịn & với người chung quanh, thua thiệt một chút, rộng rãi một chút cuộc sống sẽ thoải mái hơn nhiều.

Bố ơi, bố hay yên tâm yên nghĩ đi, những wisdom của bố đã thấm nhuần trong chúng con & sẽ tiếp tục lan truyền vào những đời sau. 
Sự thành công trong cuộc đời của con cháu là nhờ ơn bố đó.

Kính Bác

Hôm nay đây ngày 49, cũng là ngày chung thất Bác ơi,
Con nguyện cầu trên Chư Phật 10 phương chứng giám.
Lòng thành nầy cầu nguyện Bác vảng sanh.
Về cõi Phật, cõi Tây Phương Tịnh Độ,
Sống an nhàn không lo lắng suy tư.
Nơi trần thế: Con nhớ đêm tưởng niệm.
Bác nằm đó đã mỉm cười trong trần thức,
Bác vừa lòng cùng sung sướng quá đi thôi…
Anh Hà, chị Dung, em Thu Hương cùng các con, các cháu,
Vẫn một lòng nhớ lời Bác dạy Bác ơi.
Trên thuận dưới hoà, lời Cha dặn đó,
Khắc trong lòng mãi mãi Cha ơi.
Thuở hàn vi Cha vô cùng cực khổ,
Đến bây giờ Cha vĩnh biệt chúng con,
Trong chúng con có khi làm Cha không vừa ý,
Và giờ nầy chúng con xin hối hận Cha ơi.
Chúng con nhớ mãi:
Công Cha như núi dựng mây ngàn,
Làm sao kể hết bằng lời bằng thơ…
Bây giờ đây Bố vẫy tay vĩnh biệt,
Còn Mẹ già ở lại chúng con lo…
Một ngày nọ vào năm hai mốt,
Chúng con cùng Sư Cô đến viếng đến thăm.
Bác mừng Sư Cô và để tâm niệm Phật,
Bác nở nụ cười xoá hết nỗi đau thương.
Ôi hôm nay vô thường đã đến,
Bác vẫy chào vĩnh biệt chốn dương gian.
Bác ơi bác được Phật rước rồi,
Trong lòng bác nghĩ về Tây không luân hồi.

Chào Ông Ơi. Even though you’re my Ông Ngoại, we call you Ông Ơi because my brother insisted on calling our grandparents Ông Ba Ơi. I always knew you as my wise, fearless, strong grandfather. Besides all those things, you were also proud to be you, to be a grandfather; you were proud of all your grandchildren. I remember how you knew Vietnamese, English, and French. I used to be in awe when I heard you speak French, and I was proud of my grandfather as well. You used to stand and watch me do homework with a big smile on your face. I would hug and kiss you to greet you, and again, with that big smile, you would say, “Giỏi quá.” You were proud of me, simply because I greeted you. You told me, “Good job,” because I hugged you. But I remember when your health began to start visibly declining. I remember I hugged and greeted you, and even though you could barely speak to us anymore, like secondary memory, you would still tell me, “Giỏi quá.” But I also remember the day that I went to greet you, and I didn’t hear anything back; that was when I knew that things really were declining. As you were proud of us, now I am proud of you. We send you off with pride for our amazing, brave grandfather. Now, we can say to you, “Giỏi quá.”

Ong was the coolest, wisest, strongest, independent, intimidating, but most loving man I knew, someone I was truly in awe of. The many lives he lived is something I still can’t wrap my head around. I knew he was special when I heard he used to own and run an ice cream shop. But to me, he was just my Ong noi and that was more than enough. 

I can still recall the way he would call my name in his exact words “Thao oi!”. Once I heard that I immediately would come to him, no questions. I would come especially fast when I would get off my bus after school. He was a ways from the bus stop, but even from afar I could tell it was him. He would be standing with this hands behind his back, wearing his bucket hat. Rain or shine, he was always there so I wouldn’t walk alone. If he couldn’t make it, he would always make sure Ba Noi was in his place. I remembered he would make me carry a hat in my backpack so that I could wear it on the walk home. If I didn’t have my hat, he would give me his. That was one of the many ways he showed me he loved me.

I never doubted how much he loved his family and I know he could say the same about us. I am grateful for the family he has built because we all know how rare being this close is. I have never felt luckier to be surrounded by the most amazing people that I call family, and it’s all thanks to him.
It’s hard to narrow all my thoughts, feelings, and memories into words, but that’s because I truly had the best experiences with him.

Ông Nội là một trong những người quảng trọng nhất trong đời con. Con sẽ ghi nhớ tất cả những gương sáng ông nội đã để lại cho con noi theo. Ông nói sẽ mãi mãi ở trong tim con. Con cám ơn ông nội về tất cả những gi ông nội đã làm cho con, và chào cho con.
Ong, I miss you so much already, but you will live on within us for the rest of our lives. It has been my greatest privilege to live these past 22 years in your presence and I would not change it for the world. Thank you for being the best Ong.

Một con người hy sinh bản thân để giành tất cả những gì là tốt đẹp nhất cho vợ, con, cháu…và những người thân! Thật trân quý và kính trọng Người-Ông chú ruột kính mến của tôi - Cầu mong Ông sớm siêu thoát về nơi cực lạc!

My Ông Ngoài, or as I called him, Ông Ơi, was the wisest man I knew. When I picture him, I see him sitting at the dinner table, reading from his giant blue dictionary. Not a day went by that he didn’t open it up and study it. He would always call us over and tell us random life lessons and tell us to do well in school. In high school, when he found out my cousin Trang and I were learning French he was very excited since he worked as a French interpreter when he was young in Vietnamese. I remember he would always try to talk with us in French to test our skills and we’d be too embarrassed to respond. 

I’ll remember all the steak he use to eat (every day for lunch with a side salad and thousand island dressing), the coffee he used to drink, and the avocado smoothies he used to always make. He loved to give use treats around Tet and he would always sneak us the best mung bean candy, the small yellow box with the gold foil wrapper. Since he’s passed, I’ve gotten random reminders of him. A box of Almond Roca showed up at my office randomly and last night my food came with a side salad of lettuce and thousand island dressing, like he used to always eat. It makes me think that maybe he’s watching over me right now and telling me he’s ok. I hope he’s at peace tinkering away in his new “Winter Castle.” I’ll always love you Ong and I’ll miss you. 

One of my favorite things to hear growing up, was always stories about Ong Noi. Hearing about the life he lived in Vietnam was always so different. But they also showed me just how strong of a person my Ong Noi was. It takes a lot to go through the hardships he did, like fighting in a war, then being captured and having to survive in a prison. And despite all that hardship, he was still able to make his way to America, build up this beautiful family, and find success. It takes a strong person to do that.

And while these listening to these stories showed me how strong Ong Noi was, it was spending time with him that showed me how caring and loving he was. Everyday after elementary school, when I got off the bus, he would be there. Every day, without fail. He would walk me home and ask me questions about what I did in school that day. And during the summer whenever I would go to his house with my siblings or cousins, he would share all of his delicious meals that Ba Noi would make because he knew we were eyeing it all the time.

My Ong Noi was many, wonderful things, and I will always remember him as a loving grandfather who taught me what it means to be strong. 

I’m so proud to have been his grandson. I’ll miss you, and I love you.

I don’t have the best memory but i do remembered all parents were out at a concert and ong Oi gathered us cousins to sit at the dining table while he told us stories from his past. He was kind of a badass. Brave, strong, and disciplined and enlisting in the army. My earliest memory of being disciplined i think i lied about eating a cookie and ong Oi scolded me and I’ve never forgotten it which probably has some effect because I’m a terrible liar now

But mostly, I remembered how much that Ong Oi loved us and wanted us to work hard and do well. I love you and I’m glad you’re no longer in pain, Rest In Peace

Tôi là em dâu út trong gia đình. Tuy thời gian tôi được gần gũi bên Anh rất ít trong những lần Anh về thăm quê hương đất nước, nhưng tôi cảm nhận được ở Anh là một người rất bao dung, nhân từ, tận tình, chu đáo với mọi người trong gia đình cũng như ngoài xã hội. Điều đó đã được thể hiện sự quan tâm, chăm sóc của Anh tới cả những người phục vụ và lái xe. Những động thái của Anh, tôi đều dõi theo và nhập vào tâm. Anh là tấm gương sáng cho mọi người trong gia đình tôi noi theo.  Tuy Anh đã đi xa nhưng hình ảnh của Anh mãi mãi in đậm trong trái tim của mọi người trong gia đình tôi.

The fond memories I have of Ong Oi will remain deeply rooted in my heart. From listening to him read his big green dictionary to snacking on banh dau xanh with him, these little moments bring me so much joy and comfort when I think about Ong Oi. I know that he will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, strength, love, care and so much more. All thanks to him, I have grown up surrounded by an extremely supportive and loving family due to his strong foundations built upon discipline and hard work. May you rest in peace Ong Oi. We love you so so much. 

We are celebrating the life of Ong Noi. My favorite memories I have with Ong Noi would be the endless amount of time I spent growing up at Ba Noi  and Ong Noi’s house. It still makes me laugh how Ba Noi would make Ong Noi the same lunch, beef salad, every day, but somehow in the end, the cousins and I were the ones who ate his meal since he gave away all of his food to us. Since I was little, I always remembered him smiling, joking around, and
being so full of spirit. From the stories my own dad has told me, he was a courageous man, a smart man, worked hard for everything he had, loved his family and children the most, and
was a role model to us all. It makes me very emotional to think about how he won’t be able to see all of us, his grandchildren, grow up. However, I am very blessed and privileged to have him as a grandpa and I will always treasure my memories with him.

Ong Noi deeply cared for his family. I didn't realize till I was much older how lucky I was to have such a big and loving family. He instilled in us how important it was to stick together. He made sure that all of his kids loved each other, took care of each other, and looked out for one another. I remember memories like weekly dinners on Saturdays at Ong Noi's house, family Reno trips, Lunar New Year, birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc.  Any occasion there was, we celebrated together. When I was going through Ong Noi's obituary and was looking at the old pictures and memories, one thing I noticed was that Ong Noi was so handsome. He was always smiling. It made me feel like I could remember his laugh, and I felt like I could picture his laugh in my head. He always looked so proud of his family. 

Obviously with family comes love. The amount of love Ong Noi had for Ba Noi, his kids, and his grandkids, was immeasurable. Growing up, I loved going to Ong Noi's house. All the grandkids would come over, listen to him tell stories, speak French to us, read the dictionary, and eat lunch. My favorite was lunch time when Ba Noi would always cook him this steak and a side salad. Every kid has a memory of that steak. We were always hungry, and Ba Noi was a great cook. If you were the lucky kid that day, you would get a couple bites of Ong Noi's steak. That's probably why I love steak so much, because of Ong Noi.

No matter how much time you spend with someone and no matter the amount of memories you have with them, it's always sad to lose someone you love, especially someone like Ong Noi. Someone who was so caring, disciplined, smart, fierce, and strong. These are the values he raised us on and why our family has grown to be such a strong-willed and successful family. I know he's in a better place now, and I'm happy he was surrounded by his family his whole life even up to his passing. Rest in Peace Ong Noi. We all love you so much. 

Bố của tôi … một vài câu chuyện về bố…
Có lẽ trong mấy anh chị em, tôi là người được bố cưng nhất. Tôi được nghe kể lại, sau khi mẹ sinh liên tiếp 4 cậu quí tử, bố mẹ rất mong có con gái.  Bằng chứng là anh H. đã được mặc thử những bộ đồ bé gái khi còn bé. Oops sorry anh H.  Cho nên khi tôi được sinh ra, tôi trở thành con gái rượu của bố.  Mấy anh người nào cũng được ăn thắt lưng của bố nhiều lần.  Ngay cả nhỏ D. và nhỏ T. cũng được thử qua món thắt lưng.  Riêng tôi, khi bố đưa thắt lưng lên thì nước mắt tôi đã chảy ra không ngừng và như vậy là tôi đã thoát thân.  Đương nhiên không phải tự nhiên tụi tôi bị ăn đòn hoặc sắp bị ăn đòn, đứa nào cũng có lỗi như là:  trốn đi chơi, không chịu học, học bạ không tốt, vân vân và vân vân… nói chung là đứa nào cũng làm điều gì đó không tốt…
Bố là người rất thông minh,  bố tự học tiếng Pháp, tự học tiếng Anh, bố rất thích đọc sách, rất thích phát minh và rất khéo tay.  Cho đến bây giờ vẫn còn những sản phẩm của bố rải rác trong nhà.  
Có 1 điều chúng tôi vẫn phàn nàn là bố thích mua đồ sale và thích tích trữ.  Mỗi khi bố cầm báo sale, chúng tôi đều nói “bố đừng mua nữa bố có rồi mà”.  Nhưng mỗi khi ai cũng thiếu cái gì cũng đến hỏi bố và được bố cho cái đó đem về. Cách đây vài ngày tụi tôi lại được nhận món quà kỷ niệm bất ngờ của bố trong mớ đồ cũ của bố.  
Bố vào College học sửa xe và đứng đầu trong tất cả các lớp.  Những tưởng bố rất nhiều thích xe, nhưng thật ra bố rất ghét lái xe ngay cả xe đạp.  Khi còn ở Việt Nam, bố vẫn thích có người chở.  Bằng chứng là khi qua Mỹ mặc dù có bằng lái nhưng bố lái xe có 2, 3 lần.  Mọi người trong nhà vẫn không quên lần cuối cùng bố lái xe.  Tưởng tượng trên con đường chỉ có 1 lane - tốc độ tối đa 35 miles/1hr- có một chiếc xe chạy 5 miles - vừa chạy vừa thắng khói mù mịt, cả một đoàn xe dài nối đuôi và bấm còi inh ỏi… đó là lần cuối bố lái xe và chúng tôi đã làm tài xế cho bố từ khi đó. 
Bố ơi, con rất thương và nhớ bố…

Our Beloved Dad,
 
Dad, you are no longer with us on this earthly life, the temporary life that ends, but a new beginning for the eternal life. That does not meant you are forgotten! You  are forever alive in our hearts! In fact, you just simply started a new life, the eternal life that God had intended for you as well as for all of us. We no longer can feel your physical present, but you are here with us, in spirit. I want your soul to be happy and be in peace with The Almighty God. He is our only True God and True Happiness.

You are an awesome role model for all of us to look upon and live it. You touched so many lives and so many showed their respect and appreciation because you truly shaped the lives that you touched! You not only taught us to strive and always do our best to succeed in all aspect of life, but more important, to treat each other with respect and dignity from the oldest to the youngest. 
The extended family that you had built upon had been but just with love, respect and honesty had take us where we are today. We are united in harmony as an extended family, with our siblings, though there are times of disagreements and differences, but we managed to get over it.  We will cherished and treasured your love and life lessons in our hearts. Thank you for being our dad! We love you as words can’t express it all, the respect and gratitude we have for you!
Rest in peace Dad!  Please look down upon us and pray to God for us!

Bố cho phép con được chia xẻ những cảm nghĩ của con về Bố với Mẹ, các em, các cháu, và với những họ hàng, bạn bè đã đến để tiễn đưa Bố về cõi Phật. Từ lúc biết Bố bị bệnh Alzheimer, đã gần mười năm qua, con đã không tin và đã cố gắng không tin sẽ có ngày con không được ở bên cạnh Bố nữa. Nhưng bây giờ Bố đã ra đi. Bố ơi, con yêu Bố thật nhiều, và Bố sẽ mãi mãi ở trong trái tim, trong tâm trí của con.
Con luôn nhớ về Bố, đã làm lụng cả đời để lo cho gia đình. Và hơn thế nữa, Bố luôn lo cho người nghèo khó chung quanh.
Bố, lớn lên từ vùng quê miền Bắc, đã ra đời tự lập từ năm mười sáu tuổi. Xã hội loạn lạc, trong thời chiến tranh, Bố đã thay đổi nhiều nghề, từ phục vụ trong quân đội, qua mở cửa hàng tạp hoá, mua bán rượu bia, mở tiệm nước đá, tiệm kem, sang làm Phó Chủ Nhiệm Hợp Tác Xã. Bố thật thông minh, thật sáng tạo, nên công việc nào cũng thành công. Và Bố thương mến những người nghèo khó hơn, nên được nhân viên, hàng xóm yêu quý. Qua Mỹ, dù đã lớn tuổi, nhưng Bố đã đi học lại college và Bố đã tự hào được cấp bằng Master Technician, sau khi đậu  bẩy bằng sửa xe hơi.
Bố ơi, nghĩ đến Bố, con tự hào thật nhiều về Bố. Và thật buồn bây giờ, người con yêu nhất cả đời, là Bố, đã không còn nữa. Nhưng con mãi nghe lời dạy của Bố, biết sống làm người, lo cho tương lai và gia đình. Bố ơi, con nhớ Bố quá !!!

My dad’s entire life is wrapped up in these photos from early days with just him and my mom all the way up to the last Christmas he spent with the entire family.  He has been there for every major event in our lives and some of his grandchildren as well.  If his health permitted, he would not want to miss any of it.  During all the vacations with families and friends, he always had a camera or camcorder by his side as it was one of his favorite hobbies.  I am where I am today all due to his guidance.  Although I did not appreciate it so much in my younger years, I now wish to hear his voice scolding me again for all the mischievous things that I have done.  I wish to once again hear the word “buffaloes” echoing from his voice as that is his way of scolding me “đồ trâu bò” in Vietnamese.  After talking to my niece yesterday, I realized even more how much I had misunderstood his intention and did not appreciate his advice as much at the time.  So I just want to say “ Sorry Dad and thank you for all the you have done for me and for the entire family throughout your life.  I am honored and proud to have you as my father.  I love you forever and always.  Please Rest In Peace …. Your loving Bé Út ….❤️😘
