HANEY, James Mark, 68, of Sandwich, passed away Tuesday, June 26 after a valiant battle with cancer, surrounded in his final days by his loving family. Born on November 25, 1949 in Brookline and named James by his grandmother, his mother promptly called him Mark and the name stuck. Lifelong loving friend to Anne (Luca), to whom he was married for thirty five years. Deeply devoted father of Brian M. Haney and his wife, Andrea (Carroll) of Winchester, and of Kevin M. Haney and his wife, Ashley (Morrison) of Wilton, CT. Adored Gramps to his grandchildren: Luke, Lauren, and Hunter. Loving brother of Joseph Haney of Weymouth, Peter Haney of Scottsdale, AZ, Judy Zackrison of Bridgewater, and Michael Haney of Duxbury. Predeceased by his parents, John W. Haney, Sr. and Margaret (Donahue), his brothers, John W. Haney, Jr. and Paul V. Haney, and his sister, Maryann Haney.
Raised in Weymouth as one of eight children, the Haney house was filled with a constant buzz. Mark graduated from Bridgewater State University and was proud to follow in his mother’s footsteps by attending New England School of Law from which he received his law degree in 1981. Then began Mark’s career as a conveyancing attorney and Land Court Examiner, roles he was as passionate about as his role as a husband and father. Mark was never as happy as when he was handed a complex title by a client who told him, “everyone told me this is a mess but that you can handle it.” He always did, and usually with a knowing and sly grin on his face.
Mark moved to Sandwich with his young family in 1983 and was proud to contribute to the community by coaching countless baseball teams for his two boys and by being actively involved in town politics and planning. When not in his office or on a sports field, Mark could be found either in his garden tending to whatever was in season or in his kitchen cooking some gourmet meal, usually without a recipe.
Mark’s Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville, on Saturday, June 30, at 10:00am where he was proud to see his son married and his first two grandchildren baptized. Internment to follow in the Sandwich Town Cemetery. All are cordially invited to a reception immediately following the Mass and Internment.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery Program (https://www.cancer.org/treatment/support-programs-and-services/road-to-recovery.html), whose volunteers provided immeasurable assistance and support to Mark during his treatment.
Mark’s family would like to express their eternal gratitude to the staff of the Pavilion Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Hyannis for the extraordinary compassion, attention, and care they provided Mark throughout his journey.
