I was saddened to learn of Jos Schermerhorn's death.  She was our neighbor at the Sandwich Downs cottage for many years,   I knew the family well.  Our families were co-mingled over decades.  Reading of Jos's death marks a true changing of the guard in Sandwich Downs.   Our family and hers knew it when it was a summer paradise. 



Sending much love to her family.  Jos was an exceptional person - bringing light, joy, wisdom and  humor wherever she went.  She was the first at St. John's to befriend me, and rope me onto one committee and project after another!  For years, she was so important to me - almost a surrogate mother - and supported me daily when I was raising my kids in Sandwich.  Visits to see her and Skid are precious memories and deeply sad that they are both gone now. Rest in Peace dear friend.

I do not know where to start because I have so many pleasant memories of the Schermerhorn family clan.  The Hartwell and the Schermerhorn families go way back to the early days of Sandwich Downs. I am so thankful for the memories of family time together over the years.   My favorite memory of Jos is seeing her on the beach, having walked barefoot  down the path for a refreshing swim.  The temperature of the water did not matter as she did her laps from jetty to jetty and encouraged children to swim too.  She was always extremely  friendly to me and my family.  Her warm smile and genuine interest in us inspired me.  Her positive  family legacy lives on through the lives of her family and  Sandwich Downs will continue to be  a very special place thanks to Jos!

Fun, loving, and caring - with a true zeal for all dimensions of life by living life to the fullest - - that is the Jos I remember as my next door neighbor and mother of my dear childhood friends Bud, Rick, Hope, and Tom. She lovingly made us better prepared to face a not-always-friendly world. And, we are all better off for it. Jos, see you on the other side- barefoot and all! 

I was so sad to hear of Jocelyn's passing.  She made me smile everytime I went to Decauter House.  I will miss her sunny disposition and the way she encouraged so many of the residents.  She was a treasure.

We were too far away to visit much but we will miss our phone conversations. It was always great to keep in touch with the cousins no matter how far away. We'll all miss Jos.

Whenever I'm out on my back porch filling my bird feeders, I almost always think of Jos.  Living next door to the Schermerhorn family allowed me the opportunity to observe Jos, barefoot in all kinds of weather, feeding her beloved cardinals, chickadees, etc.  She really was attuned to the natural world.  It was a delight to watch.  RIP Jos.

We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Jos.   We are distant relatives of Jos but became good friends with her when we began taking vacations in Sandwich when our children were young.  Jos would always come over to our hotel and bring things like blueberry muffins and chips for the kids. She treated us like family.   She always seemed to have a positive outlook no matter what was going on in her life.   We greatly appreciate how nice that Jos, Hope, and the rest of the family treated us when we were at the Cape and are very sorry that you have lost the Matriarch of your family.

We are all better for having known this incredibly wonderful woman!
Jos was the first person Trinity and I met when we moved to the Cape.  She was trotting down Wing Boulevard, barefoot,  so welcoming... and full of life and love.
Every hike I have taken since has been thanks to her generous guidance...all of her recommendations becoming my favorite haunts.
We could all strive to age as beautifully as Jos.
The joy with which she embraced life, and each of us along the way, is such an inspiration. 
 Her's is a model of a life well-lived!

I was so saddened to read of Jos's passing. She is truly one of my treasured memories of growing up in Sandwich Downs on Cape Cod. She was the one who first introduced me to her family after we first moved into the neighborhood in 1966. I was 11 yrs. old.  Rick, Bud, Hope and Tommy and Mr. Schermerhorn. I remember riding around with Rick in the ' Flying Dutchman '. The last time I saw Jos I told her that those were the best days. And she looked at me as to say " yes dear, do try to grow up ". Just kidding. But she did have a point. She was always in the water swimming and smiling and how I will miss her and those days. Always positive, always warm and friendly. The best. My deepest condolences to the Schermerhorn family. I will always love you.

Jos was so natural, full of fun, and one of my favorite aunts.  She was also a great sister to my mom.  I will forever remember her smile, her voice and her love of life and family.  She lived life fully and was surrounded by family love, especially the love of her children, up until the end.  I am heartbroken by her death, but take comfort in the fact that hers was a life well lived.
