Joseph John Bakunas

Joseph John Bakunas passed away on October 23, 2025, at his home in Sandwich, MA. He was 69 years old. He was born in Boston, MA, to the late Alphonse J. Bakunas and to Theresa Rita Bakunas (Sanda) on March 4, 1956.

Joseph was a generous, compassionate, hard-working, light-hearted individual who could fill a room with his humor. He grew up in Dedham and graduated from Dedham High School. Joseph was an accomplished baseball pitcher during his years at DHS and was awarded the “unsung hero award”. He continued playing baseball at Mass Bay Community College and was an All Star in the Newton City Baseball league.

Joseph was a co-owner of IBI Construction, a company based in East Sandwich, MA. He was passionate about building houses and loved spending time by the ocean at Cape Cod.

He is survived by his mother, Theresa, and brother Donald of Charlestown, his companion Sharon Peterson of Sandwich, his sister Joan Foster and her husband David of Uxbridge, as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members. He was predeceased by his father, Alphonse Bakunas.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 2nd, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA. A graveside service will follow on Monday, November 3rd, at 12:00 pm at New Calvary Cemetery, Boston, MA.
