Michael leaves behind the loves of his life, his wife of 40 years, Pamela Griffin (Rose), his daughter Rachael Sminkey (Griffin) and her husband Robert of East Falmouth, MA, and his two beautiful grandchildren, Olivia Rose and Griffin Gray.
Michael grew up in Winthrop, MA and was the first born son to the late Richard and Theresa Griffin (Corcoran). He is survived by his four brothers, Richard Griffin and his wife Margot of Sterling, MA, Kevin Griffin and his wife Darlene of Weymouth, MA, Robert Griffin and his wife Betty of Bristol, RI and Timothy Griffin and his wife Nicoletta of Hanover, MA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Michael was well known for his fulfilling career of 34 years at the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, starting as a bus driver and then working in the Operations Control Center as a dispatcher. Despite the daily commute to Boston, Michael loved his career and was highly respected for his talent.
Michael had a true passion for the outdoors, often relating it to his time in the Boy Scouts. He spent many winters heading North to “ski country”, absolutely loved the beach and would often grab a towel and his beach chair and “go for a swim” even when Cape Cod Bay was chilly. He had a passion for boating and spent countless weekends on the sandbar in Barnstable Harbor with his family and friends; A place that will forever be cherished and hold his memory. But nothing compared to the love and happiness he found by doing yard work on his own property. Michael could always be found in the backyard mowing grass, planting trees along the driveway or moving wood by the woodpile; Ask those closest to him and they’d tell you with certainty that he’d find any reason to dig a hole.
Michael’s kind and faithful soul will be greatly missed, but his love and legacy will live on through his daughter and grandchildren, whom he talked proudly of. His new favorite name was “Grandpa”.
Michael’s wife and daughter would like to thank the loving nurses at the McCarthy Care Center, where he spent his final moments.
A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 22nd at 11AM at Corpus Christi Parish, 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, East Sandwich. Visitation will be held prior, from 10-11AM at the church. Burial will be private.
