He was born on November 5, 1954, in Boston, MA, a son of the late George and Margaret McCarthy.
He lived a life rooted in family, friendship, and service. Paul grew up in Mattapan and attended St. Angela’s Elementary School and later attended Hyde Park High School. His early years laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication and hard work. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local 25 and served with distinction at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department as a Captain until his retirement in 2015. Throughout his career, Paul earned the respect of colleagues and community members alike through his steadfast commitment and integrity.
Above all else, Paul was a devoted family man. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Janet McCarthy, with whom he shared many cherished years. He leaves behind his son Paul M. McCarthy and daughter-in-law Alex Bodrie; daughters Mary McCarthy and her partner Nate Peck, and Kristin McCarthy and her husband Zach Boykin. Paul took immense pride in his role as “Gompa” to his nine beloved grandchildren: Elijah, Paxton, Aiden, Josephine, Archer, Emma, Jonah, Griffin, and Zoe. His love for them was boundless and brought him great joy.
Paul was the beloved brother of George McCarthy and his partner Shirley Sprague of Hyde park and Kevin McCarthy of Weymouth. His dear friends John Gilmore and Kenny Philpott were constants in his life whose companionship meant the world to him.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Joseph and John; and beloved sister Loretta McCarthy. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Paul found great happiness in simple pleasures—golfing on sunny days, casting a line while fishing, skiing down snowy slopes, or simply spending time surrounded by family and friends. Paul never missed his children's sporting events even if it meant he missed watching a New England Patriots Game. Beside his recliner chair, “Gompa’s candy jar” was always stocked for his grandchildren’s visits. He also greatly enjoyed his weekly Wednesday lunches with his brothers and friends at the Sandwich Hollows Club House.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Paul “Gonta” McCarthy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.
