

He spent his younger years growing up with his three brothers, Edwin, Clarence, Alton and his two sisters Bessie (Gibbs) Guthrie and Inez (Gibbs) Monk.
In addition to helping his dad with chores on their tiny farm on Georges Rock Road in Sandwich, at the age of 12 he delivered newspapers on a route with 75 to 100 customers on a bicycle purchased contractually from the newspaper company. The newspapers sold for 2 cents and he received 1 cent each, out of which he paid for the bike.
He was educated in Sandwich at the Sandhill School, the Summer Street School and the Henry T. Wing School. He went to work for the W.P.A. (Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration) and the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corp). He operated heavy equipment and cleared land at Camp Edwards Army Base and Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth, along with the widening of the Cape Cod Canal.
He married Mary Campbell of Wareham and they had one daughter Janice Marie Gibbs.
At the height of World War II, all the Gibbs brothers joined the cause with Webster enlisting in the United States Army. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. After the defeat of Germany he was sent to the Pacific Theater where he was assigned as an engineer on the Admiral’s ocean cruiser. Returning to Sandwich he worked at the Canal Freezer Plant and later co-owned and operated a fishing boat out of Sandwich Marina. He also worked on a small barge removing cargo from a ship that sank in the Cape Cod Canal.
He married Dorothy T. Gibbs and went to work at a Pet Food Co. in Weymouth MA as a heavy equipment operator. He worked there until he retired when the company moved south. He then did landscaping until his early nineties.
After the passing of wife, Dorothy T. Gibbs in 1985, he lived with his step daughter Lucille Crealese and her husband Ray until he returned to Sandwich, living with his son-in-law, Charles Peterson and partner Candance Constantino.
Besides his sister Bessie Guthrie of Seneca Falls, NY, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Dorothy Gibbs of Sandwich and Barbara Gibbs of San Leandro, CA, his three grandsons, Charles, David and Mark Peterson and their wives Beth, Carol and Julie, seven great-grandchildren, Charles W., Clark D., Veronica, Sahara, Margret, Jasmine and Mikala, along with many nieces and nephews.
