Engineer, coach, and devout family man, William Paul “Bill” Hafferty (64) of Sandwich, Massachusetts passed away unexpectedly in his home on March 21, 2023. He made a life out of figuring out how the world worked and loved nothing more than using that knowledge to see that those he cared about most were happy.
Bill was the son of the late William H. and Cathleen A. Hafferty and grew up in Holbrook, Massachusetts. He is survived by siblings Beth Hafferty of Hull, Patty and Dan Guerin of North Easton, Tom and Terri Hafferty of Holbrook, and Mary and Chris Sexton of Abington.
He met the love of his life, partner of 48 years, and surviving wife, Carol Ann (Monaco), at Blue Hills Regional Technical High School and went on to graduate from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1981. He started his career as a shipboard engineer for ExxonMobile and proceeded to take a landside job working in Boston in the energy field while studying for an MBA at UMass-Boston on nights and weekends. For the past 16 years he served as Director of Engineering at Cape Cod Hospital/Healthcare.
Bill and Carol built their home and family in Sandwich where they have lived the past 39 years. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his four children William Peter, Bryan Micheal and wife Mallory, Stefanie Lynn, and Jacob Allen, and his two grandchildren Miles Elliot and Cora June. He was a cherished uncle to many and like a brother to the Monaco siblings.
Bill had a passion for all things gridiron. On any given in-season weekend you could find him cheering on the Bulldogs, the Blue Knights, the Buccaneers, or the Patriots. He was a beloved coach and avid supporter of the Sandwich Youth Football program since its inception in 1992. Through a shared love for the game and the community, Bill and Carol connected with a circle of friends, sharing fun times and vacations together.
Bill could fix absolutely anything. He always had at least one DIY project underway. From auto repairs, to landscaping, to home renovations, he always made life better for those he loved. All will miss him dearly.
A wake will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 154 Route 6A Sandwich on March 28th from 4-8pm and services will be at Corpus Christi Parish 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road East Sandwich on Wednesday, March 29th at 11am.
NOTE: Allow extra travel time getting on Cape due to Sagamore Bridge repair work.
