

Betty Barrett Muir of Sandy Springs, Georgia died at her home on Monday, December 15, 2014. She was 91. Betty was born in St. Paul, Nebraska on January 10, 1923, the sixth of nine children, to Charles Arthur and May Winter Barrett. She inherited the family traits of intelligence, determination, responsibility, courage, scrappiness, and the gift of gab. After her graduation from high school, Betty moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the War Production Board until 1945. During this time she was featured in newsreels and Time magazine demonstrating the “Victory Bike”. After the war, Betty moved to Vicksburg, Michigan where a co-worker, Maxine Muir, introduced Betty to her brother Tom. Following an eighteen month courtship, Tom and Betty were married on October 4, 1947 and moved to Atlanta. Together they raised three children, cherished two granddaughters, were active members in their church, and enjoyed their time with relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and May Barrett, her husband Tom, her brothers Edward, Marty, Elly Barrett and by sisters Thelma Fleming, Vera Tracy, and Bonnie Habecker. Betty is survived by two brothers, Bob Barrett (Betty) and Bud Barrett, her daughter Maureen Hicks (Dan), sons Thomas P. Muir (Sharona), and Terence M. Muir, two granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:00 at St. John United Methodist Church, 550 Mt. Paran Rd. Atlanta, Ga. 30327. The family will receive friends at 12:30 at the church. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to make memorial contributions may do so in Betty’s memory to St. John United Methodist Church.
