Burt Cloud, 78, of Sandy Springs died October 2, 2022. Burt was born August 5, 1944 in Lafayette, Alabama to Burt Cloud, Sr. and Louise Lowe Cloud. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Bill Cloud. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sherry Grace Cloud, his son Cary Cloud (Cathy) of Atlanta, his daughter Lindsey Cloud Mervis (Aaron) of Arlington, VA, his four adoring granddaughters, Taylor Grace Cloud (14), Abby Caroline Cloud (12), Gracie Rose Mervis (9) and Kate Cloud Mervis (6), his brother Randy Cloud (LuBowen) of Griffin, GA, sister-in-law Carole McManus Cloud (Bill) of Destin, FL, a large and close-knit group of cousins, and many friends who he considered family.
Burt was a proud member of the Class of 1962 at Lanier High School in Montgomery, AL and enjoyed attending multiple reunions with his classmates, including the recent 60th reunion in April 2022. He attended Auburn University on a Naval ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1966 from the School of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management. He held many leadership positions in student government and served as president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. It was at Auburn that he met the love of his life, Sherry Grace (“Sherrygrace”) along with many lifelong friends. After graduating in 1966, he spent four years as a Supply Officer in the Navy, including tours aboard the USS San Marcos in the Mediterranean and at Naval Supply Center, Charleston, SC. Following his service in the Navy he earned an MBA from Georgia State University. He enjoyed a 29-year career with BellSouth in Human Resources and Labor Relations beginning in the Atlanta area and holding positions in Covington, GA, Athens, GA and Basking Ridge, NJ before returning to Atlanta in 1984. In 1999 Burt began a second career in residential real estate with Northside Realty (later Coldwell Banker), where he earned many sales awards.
Burt was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations, including Leadership Georgia, Rotary International of Sandy Springs, United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, American Cancer Society and Zoo Atlanta. He was an Elder at Peachtree Christian Church in Midtown Atlanta. He also served as past president of the Atlanta Auburn Club and as a member of the Auburn Alumni Board from 2006-2010.
Burt loved Auburn football, cornbread, collard greens, cheap beer, and having lunch at Matthews Cafeteria. Countless friends and family members will miss his magnetic personality and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
A service celebrating Burt’s life will be held at 11am ET on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Peachtree Christian Church, 1580 Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309. A visitation with the family will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, Eagle Ranch in Flowery Branch, GA, or Peachtree Christian Church.
