

Dr. Carl J. Tschappat, age 71, passed away September 21, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Gertrude Tschappat. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Sutter Tschappat, daughter Valerie Tschappat Thompson and husband, Scot, of Atlanta, Georgia, and son, Warren Tschappat and wife, Cigdem, of Irvine, California; grandchildren, Connor Thompson, Maya Tschappat, Mark Tschappat, Seth Thompson , Adrienne Thompson Bagley and husband, Jonathan; great-grandchildren Sarah and Jon Bagley. He is also survived by his very special nephews and nieces, George and Candy Beck, Philip and Kathy Beck, Wayne and Lenetta Beck; also great-nephews and nieces, Mandy Beck, Jeff Beck, Elizabeth Beck, Meredith Beck, Kenny Beck and Gary Beck. Carl grew up in Utica, Ohio, where his parents owned the local grocery store. Dr. Tschappat graduated from The Ohio State University with a PHD in 1966 and went on to teach at The Ohio State University, Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology and Clark Atlanta University. He was the Chairman of the Department of Real Estate and Urban Affairs at Georgia State University. He left the full-time teaching profession in the 1970s to form and co-own a successful real estate appraisal company, Land Development Analysts, Inc., (L.D.A., Inc.). Carl was a member of the Appraisal Institute and held the MAI designation for many years. He also served as the President of the Atlanta chapter of The Society of Real Estate Appraisers. Carl lectured nationally for The American Institute of Architects and he co-authored a real estate finance textbook along with authoring more than 50 published articles. Carl was also a longtime member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. He served as an Elder, a Stephen Minister, and a Sunday school teacher. His wisdom, wit and willingness to serve will be greatly missed. Carl loved life and his greatest joys were the simple things such as family, friends, his numerous pets, and a love for watching classic TV shows and movies. He was a beloved husband of 48 years, father, grandfather, uncle, teacher and mentor who will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends at Patterson’s, Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 23rd. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 24th at 2:00 p.m., in the Sanctuary of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception in the Williams Center. Graveside service will follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs.
