EDGAR R. “Ed” Whiteman, Jr., 82, a native of Atlanta, died March 19, 2017. Mr. Whiteman grew up in Morningside and graduated from Grady High School prior to attending Georgia Tech. He also served in The U.S. Army Intelligence in Panama. In 1959 Ed founded Smyrna Container Company which he operated with his wife, Dixie until they retired in 2012. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dixie E. Whiteman; daughters, Amelia W. DeValle (Tony), Carrie W. Layton (Corey); grandchildren, William and Emma Layton, Alexandre, Arthur, Eloise and Edouard DeValle; brother, Dr. Joseph B. Whiteman (Mary); sister, Virginia Whiteman, Robinson (William); and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 6 to 8 o’clock at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Funeral services will be Friday, March 24, 2017 at 2 o’clock at Patterson’s Arlington Chapel. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
