A lifelong Atlantan, Dr. Ferrier was born and raised in Atlanta and remained deeply rooted in the community he served for decades. From an early age, he demonstrated discipline and determination, becoming one of the youngest Eagle Scouts in the country, achieving scouting’s highest honor at just 12 years old.
He graduated from Marist High School before attending the Virginia Military Institute, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He later earned his Master’s degree in Biology from the University of Virginia, followed by his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine.
Dr. Ferrier completed his internship in medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital in 1966 and went on to serve as a senior resident in surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in 1971. He was a member of the Georgia Vascular Society, the Emory Association of Vascular Surgery, the American Board of Phlebology, the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine, the International College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Known to many as “Doc,” he dedicated over 40 years to private practice as a Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgeon, serving patients and families throughout Atlanta. He practiced at Northside Hospital and West Paces Ferry Hospital, serving as Chief of Surgery for many years. In 1972, Dr. Ferrier assisted in one of the first open-heart surgeries in Atlanta.
As a medical professional, Dr. Ferrier was defined by his devotion to his patients. Regarded as an exceptional surgeon and a deeply compassionate physician, he placed their care above everything else in his life. He was beloved by his patients, who not only trusted his skill but felt his genuine concern for their well-being. He worked tirelessly, caring for anyone who needed him, and gave himself fully to the people and community he served.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Ferrier had a deep appreciation for the natural world. A lifelong lover of trees, he never missed an opportunity to identify a species and share his knowledge, especially while spending time at his farm in North Georgia.
Dr. Ferrier was a distinguished member of the Capital City Country Club for nearly 50 years. A surgeon who practiced what he preached and was deeply committed to health and fitness, he became a mentor to many adults and young people at the club gym, inspiring them to build strength and develop strong, healthy bodies.
Above all his accomplishments, Dr. Ferrier was devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his son, Frank Louis Ferrier, Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Iris Capo
