He is survived by Lenia, his devoted wife of 20 years, and his daughters, Alexandra and Sophia. He was a loving and indulgent father, giving freely of his time and sparing no expense for their education. His sisters Debbie (Hal) and Cathy (Tom) also mourn his loss, as do his nephew Matt (Erin) , and his nieces Frances (Joe) and Megan.
John was born and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. He first attended Virginia Polytech Institute, and later medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In between, he worked as a park ranger at the Shenandoah National Park, reflecting his life long love of nature.
John was certified in both family medicine and emergency medicine. He served as the Director of Medical Services for Carnival Cruise Line, as well as an officer if the US Navy Reserve. He was an acknowledged expert in medical-legal issues involving cruise lines, and was writing opinions virtually until the week of his death.
After his retirement from Carnival Cruise Lines, John worked as a medical officer for Centene, a nationwide healthcare company. He also worked part time as a medical consultant for Georgia correctional facilities. The inmates loved John for his teasing and sense of humor. He enjoyed them in return.
When his father died, John inherited a 53 acre property in Alexander City, Alabama. Despite holding two or three jobs, John found the time to visit and maintain the property. He had hoped to return and spend more time there. Death put an end to these plans.
In happier times, John took Alexandra and Sophia to Alabama to fish, and to roast marshmallows and drive golf carts in the woods. These memories will never fade away.
Rest in peace John; you will be greatly missed.
A funeral service for John will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at H.M. Patterson & Son - Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road NE Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow. John will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, GA 30076.
Honoring John’s Legacy with a Memorial Bench
John was a dedicated American who proudly served in the Navy. We were hoping that the GA National, veterans cemetery was his final resting place. Unfortunately that was not possible so instead we aim to commemorate his legacy, with a military-inspired bench at his burial site—a place where family, friends, and fellow service members can visit, reflect, and pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to help create a lasting tribute for his service in the military and in medicine. Any donation, big or small, will be deeply appreciated. Thank you for helping us keep John’s spirit alive! Small donations may be made via venmo to @alexbradberry6
