Mary Margaret Michels, 58, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia after 44 years battling and graciously accepting Multiple Sclerosis. Born December 1, 1962 in Augsburg, Germany to Captain James and Norma Stacey, Mary was the eighth of nine children. Mary was born loving, happy, smart and energetic. That energy translated into a passion for dance and sports, in particular competitive swimming with the Kerr-McGee Swim Club in Oklahoma City and the Dallas Mustangs Swim Club in Dallas. Mary graduated from Plano Senior High in 1980 and studied at Regis University and Texas A&M University. While working for Aetna in Dallas, Mary met Gregory Michels of Jersey Village, Texas marrying in 1994 at Baptist Temple in Houston. Their son, Jacob Christopher, was born in 1997. Mary’s years following Jacob’s birth were focused on her family, her Christian faith, and a determination to bring joy, humor and her faith to her friends and others. Jacob was a consistent focus always bringing her pride and happiness. Her smile lit up the room when he entered. Her faith deepened through her bible studies, her interaction with others and her love of life. Her frequent luncheons with longtime friends, weekly visits and time with her best friend, Nancy Klipp, and outings with Jacob and his friends brought her much happiness. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, James Stacey and Norma Stacey-Scott, her siblings, James Stacey, Jr., Jeanne Stacey, and Rebecca Spearman. She leaves behind her son, Jacob Michels (Georgia), and siblings Royal Stacey (Maryland), Marsha Carmichael and Catherine Shrode (Texas) and John Stacey and Mark Stacey (California) along with fifteen nieces and nephews, plus a host of loving, extended family members and friends. A celebration of life is planned for late spring in Georgia. Graveside services will be Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery in Houston.

Although I never met Mary in person, I felt as though I knew her through her devoted sister, Marsha Carmichael. Marsha and I met and connected through SAISD and still feel as if I know this family. May Mary rest in her well deserved peace, and God bless Marsha for all her attention and love to Mary and Jacob.

Mary and I met through a Bible study group at our church. God certainly showed His favor on Mary through His grace. When she spoke, we were all eager to hear her wisdom. We attended High Tech Ministries Prayer Breakfast together and Mary felt led to meet the National Keynote Speaker afterward. It was as if two friends recognized one another - she had such a magnetic personality! She also embodied dignity and wisdom along with such sweetness as my friend. I have the utmost respect for Mary and know that she is with the Lord in heaven. To Jake - your mother so loved you and I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful mother.

My best memory was when Mary turned 50 and we spent time with her. I never seen Becky so happy to be with her family. The love Mary showed me made me proud to be her Brother and she made me smile whenever I was around her. Though her circumstances wasn’t the best her spirit shown brightly as the sun and her love has always been pure, we always wish we could spend more time with those we love, however it’s the quality of that time that matters the most. Mary and Becky and all of those who have went to rest are together now and enjoying their lives eating from the tree of life with our Savior Christ. Jacob was a pure blessing to his mother and I am proud that he honored his mother, he never left her side and I thank Christ that I’m apart of such a loving and strong family.
