Dick will always be remembered as faithful to God, family and country. He was a parishioner at Our Lady of Assumption and Holy Spirit Catholic Churches. He was a devoted husband and father. Additionally, Dick was part of the Greatest Generation.
Dick was born in Pittsburgh, PA to William and Helen Reed Herman. He attended St. James Catholic Elementary School and Taylor Alderdice High School.
The day after graduating from High School, at only 17, Dick and his best friend enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. Dick’s first tour was as a Radio Specialist aboard the U-2513 (an expropriated German U-Class Submarine). In 1946, Dick and fellow crew hosted President Harry Truman, Admirals William Leahy and Charles Styer for submarine exercises off the coast of Key West, FL.
After completing his tour, Dick went to the University of Pittsburgh. It was there he met fellow student and future wife, Anita Gertrude Kapp, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.
Dick returned to active service during the Korean War. He attended Officer’s Candidate School on Treasure Island in California, and moved to New Haven, CT with his new bride. He was assigned to the USS Dogfish (SS350) where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant. Though Dick later resigned his commission and returned to Pittsburgh to rear children and run the family brokerage business, he continued service in the US Naval Reserve until 1963.
Dick moved his family to Atlanta to become Regional Sales Director for the Diamond International Corporation. The balance of his career, Dick spent running the Southeastern sales territory for Beatrice Foods (Kraft), Sanna Inc., Jim Dandy (Alpo) and others. Though Dick's business required weekly traveling, his most cherished times were spent in Atlanta at his sons' Little League baseball and Pop Warner football games, and later at his daughters’ tennis matches and tournaments.
Dick is survived by his loving family: wife Anita; Richard Jr. and Trudee Camp Herman; Dennis and Melinda Ryan Herman; Anita Herman Hogan; Hector Thillet (son-in-law); Mary Lou Herman and David Flint (son-in-law); Bruce and Christine Herman Propst; and his grandchildren: Elizabeth, Nicholas, Joseph, Holly Anna, Clare, Natalie, Emily, William, Carolyn and John. It is with great sadness that Holly Herman Thillet (Dick & Anita’s daughter) passing, preceded.
The family will be present on Wednesday, June 3 from 6-8pm at H.M. Patterson & Son (Arlington Chapel: 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA). A funeral mass will be held for Mr. Herman at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (4465 Northside Drive, Atlanta) on Thursday, June 4th at 10:00 a.m. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: www.stjude.org.
