Tomás Benito Nicolás Pérez-Zafón

Nacido el 10 de septiembre de 1964 y criado en Barcelona, Tomás creció inmerso en la vida y cultura catalana. Estudió en los Escolapios de Sant Antoni y de Sarrià, antes de licenciarse en Ingeniería Química por la Universidad Politécnica de Barcelona. Pero mucho antes y mucho después de la ingeniería, el fútbol fue una de sus grandes pasiones. Fue el mejor defensa juvenil de europa y estuvo en la selección española sub 21. Jugó en la cantera del Barça al principio. Una lesión grave hizo que le cedieran al equipo de Sant Gabriel, y posteriormente jugó en 3a división con el Sant Andreu y finalmente con el Lloret —algo de lo que se sintió orgulloso toda su vida, a veces en silencio… y a veces no tanto.

Con el tiempo, Tomás se trasladó a Estados Unidos, donde conoció y se casó con Courtney en 1995. Su vida juntos los llevó de San Francisco a Baltimore, y finalmente a Atlanta en 2004, donde echaron raíces y formaron su familia. Le encantaba que sus hijos crecieran bilingües, conectados tanto con su herencia española como con la familia a la que tanto quería.

Conocer a Tomás era conocer a alguien lleno de personalidad: carismático, profundamente curioso y ferozmente leal a los suyos. Tenía una habilidad especial para encontrar el humor en casi cualquier situación, y sus chistes de padre—muchas veces malísimos, siempre contados con total convicción—eran una parte esencial de la vida a su alrededor. Era terco, sí, pero de esa forma que solo tienen las personas que aman profundamente, sobre todo cuando se trataba de su familia y sus amigos.

También fue un hombre de múltiples etapas e intereses. A lo largo de los años, sus proyectos e ideas abarcaron desde el aceite de oliva hasta los libros infantiles y el desarrollo web—siempre persiguiendo la siguiente idea, el siguiente proyecto, la siguiente chispa de inspiración. Fuera del trabajo, disfrutaba cocinar, la fotografía, la jardinería, la pintura, ver y analizar apasionadamente el fútbol y aprender constantemente, ya fuera viendo un documental o probando algo nuevo con sus propias manos.

Su madre, Victoria Zafón-Gutierrez; su esposa, Courtney Maria Pérez; sus hijos, Tomás Alvin Pérez-Graham, Nicolás Colin Pérez-Graham y Rafaela Sofía Pérez-Graham; sus hermanas, Victoria, Leonor y Montserrat Pérez-Zafón; sus cuñados Pere, Ramón, Carlos, y Russell; sus sobrinos Daniel, Ariadna, Marc, Oscar, Jack, Desiree, Bernat, Jonah, Mina, y Gianni; y sus sobrinos-nietos (quienes dedicó su libro) Adrià y Alba siempre llevaran su recuerdo en el corazón.

Tomás Benito Nicolás Pérez-Zafón—Barcelona native, lifelong soccer lover, serial idea guy, and proud (and very funny) dad—passed away on April 12, 2026.

Born on September 10, 1964, and raised in Barcelona, Tomás grew up immersed in Catalan life and culture. He attended the Piarists of Sant Anton and Sarrià before earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. But long before and long after engineering, soccer was one of his great loves. He was the best youth defender in Europe and played for the Spanish U-21 national team. He began his career in Barça’s Youth Academy. A serious injury led to his being loaned out to the Sant Gabriel team; subsequently, he played in the Third Division with Sant Andreu and, finally, with Lloret—something of which he remained proud his entire life: sometimes silently… and sometimes not so silently.

Tomás eventually made his way to the United States, where he met and married Courtney in 1995. Their life together took them from San Francisco to Baltimore, and ultimately to Atlanta in 2004, where they put down roots and raised their family. He loved that his children grew up bilingual, able to connect with his Spanish heritage and the family he adored.

To know Tomás was to know someone full of personality—charismatic, endlessly curious, and unwaveringly loyal to the people he loved. He had a gift for finding humor in almost anything, and his dad jokes—often terrible, always delivered with confidence—were a defining feature of life around him. He was stubborn in the way only someone deeply devoted can be, especially when it came to family and friends.

He was also a man of many pursuits and reinventions. Over the years, his interests and ventures ranged from olive oil to children’s books to web development—always chasing the next idea, the next project, the next spark of inspiration. Outside of work, he found joy in cooking, photography, gardening, painting, watching (and passionately analyzing) soccer, and learning anything that caught his interest, whether through documentaries or diving in hands-on.

He is survived by his mother, Victoria Zafón-Gutierrez; his wife, Courtney Maria Pérez; his children, Tomás Alvin Pérez-Graham, Nicolás Colin Pérez-Graham, and Rafaela Sofía Pérez-Graham; and his sisters, Victoria, Leonor, and Montserrat Pérez-Zafón.

He leaves behind a life that was full, complex, and deeply felt—and a family who will carry his stories, his humor, and his spirit with them always.

Visitation will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road Ne, Sandy Springs, GA 30328, US, on April 25, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by the Funeral Service at the same location from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
