Phil was born and raised in the Bear Creek community of Columbia, Tennessee where he enjoyed fishing the Duck River, skating down a frozen Bear Creek with his adoring sister, hosting neighborhood parties to ride their pony and goat named “Billy”, and helping his father build the motor to his first car.
Phil graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1966. He was co-captain of the varsity basketball and baseball teams and went to Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas on a baseball scholarship. However, he “ran the wheels off” his Ford driving back to see his high school sweetheart, so Phil and Karen happily married on September 7, 1968. With his “pretty little red head” by his side, Phil graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture.
Phil practiced for 50 years at DDP Architects, an architectural firm he co-founded where he designed hundreds of schools throughout the southeast. Phil was an excellent golfer, prolific storyteller, and his colorful character was equally matched by his eclectic wardrobe.
Phil lived for and dedicated his life to loyally, generously, and kindly loving “his girls”, his wife and three daughters.
Phil is survived by his daughters, Brandy, Dixie, and Daisy, and sister, Lynn. His legacy also includes grandchildren Saile, Brett, Joshua, Caleb, Micah, Greyson, Arlington, Cruze, and Hudson.
