C.Robert Perryman, pioneer Orange County advertising executive, passed away on April 12th, 2018. Born in Glenn's Ferry, Idaho, Perryman's family moved to Santa Ana when he was four years old. His father joined the advertising department of the county's only newspaper, The Register.
Growing up in an atmosphere of news deadlines and advertising he liked to "hang around" the newsroom, watch the big presses and was a part of the city's only high school and junior college papers until graduation where he attended the prestigious Art Center School in Los Angeles.
The war saw him in England for nearly three years with the armed Eighth Air Force's Second Bomb Division headquarters at Ketteringham Hall.
Upon returning from overseas, Perryman joined his father's advertising agency where he worked as a copy writer. The young agency's growing list of local and advertising clients included Hawaiian Punch, direct mail and TV accounts.
Two years later his energetic father passed away leaving young Perryman to carry on the expanding agency.
In 1950 Perryman married the love of his life, Vivian Holstein. They purchased their first home in Santa Ana and had their first child, a beautiful baby girl. The company continued to grow into one of the real estate and home marketing leaders.
Perryman Advertising clients included home builders big and small along with his nearly half a century representing Orange County Title Company which later became a nationwide industry leader, First American Title.
Among Perryman's contributions to the area's growth was his part with Holstein Industries in the trendsetting Bluffs community above Newport Bay, the Rancho San Joaquin Public Golf Course and the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
The club played host to the area's only professional tournament in 1967, bringing national recognition with a line-up of some of the world's leading players to the week-long event.
Along with directing market and promotion strategies in Orange County, Perryman was also active in Palm Desert with the Sandpiper Development and the Villas overlooking the Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
The young family and his wife were always a part of Perryman's world with annual vacations at the Balboa Bay Club, trips to the Southwest and the Grand Canyon. The Perryman's booked a trip on one of the final steam ships to Hawaii on Matson lines legendary S.S. Lurline.
Although he never attended USC, he was a lifelong fan, supporter and member of Cardinal and Gold. He and Vivian attended numerous USC football games throughout the U.S. He was very proud of his Son Robert when he graduated from USC. Trojans for Life!
Their homes was always a playground for projects like the miniature landscape on the big train table in the garage. The train passed through villages, parks and mountain tunnels all created by the Perryman's.
With his part in the advertising history of Orange County he concluded his long list of successes with the Amberhills Farm development in Riverside and his novel "Boom Builder," that took the reader through the colorful free-wheeling era of the mid century housing explosion with its triumphs and tragedies. He closed his agency in 2010.
Bob was loved and survived by his wife Vivian and his children Jaya(Linda), Robert and Grandson Tyler Cole Perryman.
