It’s been three years Charles since you left us.  I think of you and miss you everyday.  At least I feel you around me and that brings me comfort.  Love you little brother!  Ride a drop of rain for me!

Uncle Chuck (Chunk),

For all of us here, there are many hours of wonderful memories and stories being shared, but there is also the sadness we all feel now that you are gone. While we take comfort knowing that you are happy and at home with the Lord, it remains hard for those of us still here. 
I will miss your smile, chuckle and full belly laugh. I will miss hearing your "Hey, Nik!" with the wonderful bear hug and grunt to come afterwards. I will miss being able to just walk by you and give you a hug in the kitchen at Auntie's, or the oh so purposefully accidental shoulder(for me)/hip(for you) bumps and shoves to make each other laugh. I will especially miss watching my daughter interact with you and watching her continue to build a loving relationship with "her favorite Uncle Chuck." Thank you for loving her the same way you have loved all of us over the years. She will miss you but "will forever hold you in her heart and mind." I am thankful for the 4 years she got to spend getting to know you. 
I will forever be grateful for all the memories we made; family dinners, holidays, birthday and especially for our summers in Arizona. Those are some of my favorites. 
Chris is really going to miss all of your conversations. Thank you for being so warm and accepting of him from the moment we brought him into the family. 
Things will be so different without you here in person, but we all know you are watching over us every day.
I hope you had the most wonderful welcoming party and that you are catching up with everyone.

Dear Uncle Chuck,
You are loved and missed.  My favorite memory was the feeling of the hugs you gave when we gathered as a family.  Your hugs always made me feel welcome and loved.  This was the same feeling I had when Grandpa Berry would hug me.  Give him and our Ohana in heaven a hug for me.

Every round we played over the years, on some beautiful spot on the course he would look at me and say, "Drew, if Heaven isn't like this ..." and I would answer "You don't want go".   We would laugh and thank  God for our good luck.

After my last round here, I will be very happy to play with him again.

"What's Upchuck?" How many times have I greeted you with that? And how many times have you laughed at it? Your quick and easy smile and laugh made all of us feel like comedians.  You have been  a part of our family since we were teens. You grew into a charming, well dressed, lovely man who my whole family adored. I will miss the comfortable way you fit in with everyone, your sense of humor and your positive attitude. In fact, I will miss absolutely everything about you. Rest easy my sweet friend. You are pain free now and Heaven is lucky to have you. XOXO

Chuck, I miss you every afternoon, when you don’t show up on the patio, calling out to me “Hey Douglas, come help me drink your beer.” I am comforted because I believe that you are home, and no longer suffering in pain. I will continue to miss you until we are united again in heaven. 

Here are some of the things that I will miss the most: --your smile, laugh, and kind or encouraging words --sitting with you at boys breakfast and sharing stories after --digging ditches together in the yard every time there was a plumbing or sprinkler problem --picking the best tomatoes and vegetables from my garden for you --waking up at 4:30am to go golfing because you had to be the first group off each day --talking about the next big tournament and discussing Tiger’s chances --long car rides in silence listening to our favorite tunes of classic rock --you asking me how the Notre Dame football team did, even though you really didn’t care, but you knew I did --barbequed dinners, out on the patio, on a perfect Santa Ana evening 
--bacchanalias for every occasion, but especially 4th of July --fishing together, and whether we were catching or not, you reminding me that the worst day fishing was still a great day --your handmade tamales with the huge corn husks, the lightest amount of masa, and filled with pork, cheese and chiles --going to Angels games, and sitting in the finest seats in the stadium, right behind home plate --filet mignon for Christmas Eve dinner after church with a good glass of red --drinking a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label on New Years’ Eve to help pass the hours 
--taking shots of tequila whenever because you knew I always had a bottle of the good stuff in the freezer

I will indeed miss you, but I believe we will be together again, hitting shots from the fairway. You were my best friend and I didn’t even know it, I just knew we were brothers. No, not siblings, brothers. Rest in peace Chuck.


This was such a great time in Maui, and we looked so young. Sharing just a short time on this planet, won't even compare to eternity with you in heaven.

Part 1/2

It is with great sorrow and also eternal hope that we write about Chuck Berry. From the time we became family through the courtship and marriage of Robby and Makayla, Chuck and Debby have graciously welcomed us into their lives. Whether it was attending church together, family meals, or in Roberto’s case around a card table with cigars and whiskey; Chuck was always generous with his time, his attention, his huge smile and his warm hugs. His friendship and mentoring of our son Robby is something that we are so thankful for. We will miss him greatly, however we are comforted by the knowledge that because of Chuck’s recognition that he, as a sinner was in need of a Savior, that his last breath on earth was his first breath in Heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I pray that Chuck’s family can find some comfort in the lyrics of this song...

I didn't know what to get you for Christmas and now I'm really at a loss. You have been given the best gift ever, you are in paradise with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and there is no pain and no sorrow.  As you told me "the coolest thing I'm getting out of my sickness is the closer I'm getting to God.  At this time of my life, He is becoming clearer and He talks to me about the miracle and blessing of my life and the miracle and blessing of what's to come ... but my prayer [now] is to honor and trust the Creator with happiness in my heart to my last breath and [all of] you are a big part of that.  God bless you."

I had the pleasure of playing golf with Chuck and Doug on a couple of occasions. Chuck was such an easy person to talk to. His stories and sense of humor added to the enjoyment of the day. He was also always willing to give me golf tips when I was struggling (which was very often)!

There is nothing that can take away the emptiness that we all feel. I know we didn't get together often which is why the times we did get together are very special to us. My Dear Chuckie, 
I love you so much and I miss you terribly. You were so handsome, especially when you got all dressed up, and you always gave the very best hugs. You were also such a gentleman. I remember that every time you and Debby took me out to dinner, when we would get back to my house, you would unlock my door and go through my house to make sure it was safe and then you would say, “You can come in, Mom.” Thank you for that and for all of the things you did for me throughout the years. My heart is broken because you passed away, but I also know that you are with Jesus now - no longer suffering and completely free of pain. Give Daddy a great big hug for me. I think of you and miss you everyday, Honey. I could never fit all of my memories with you into one little letter, so I am thankful that I don’t have to. Instead, I will cherish them all forever in my heart. One of my favorite things we used to do was spend time together out on the lanai. Sometimes, it was during a planned party with a lot of other people. Other times, it was just an ordinary day, and I’d look out my downstairs door and just see you sitting there. But it was always enjoyable, and my lanai seems awfully lonely nowadays. I also think fondly of all our daily check-ins over the phone. It was a true joy to call you not only my brother, but also my friend. As sad as I am to go through days without you, I am happy to know that you are finally home in heaven.

No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it.  And only God knows why.  Now all we have are memories of a life well lived.  Memories that will last a life time in laughter and tears.

Most recently, I was pleased to see that even on one of your sickest days, you were still yourself enough to roast me real good. I had gone over to give you your medicine and when I announced my presence in the best and loudest nurse voice I could muster, you said, “Sweetie, just because I’m sick like this doesn’t mean I’ve lost my hearing.” Forever a jokester! But truly, thank you for all your words of encouragement throughout the years, and thank you also for being such a good friend to Robby. We will miss you dearly, Chickadee. Until we meet again in glory, rest easy.

Thank you for always being you. You were quiet but always knew what you wanted to say and it was always what everyone needed to hear. Aria and I love you and will miss you but know that you’re always around. I guess I’m going to have to start smoking a cigar once a year for you.
