HOOSHANG MOSHTAEL
March 25, 1941 to January 23, 2025
Hooshang Moshtael was born on March 25, 1941 to Bahereh Mobin and Abbas Moshtael in Teheran, Iran. He grew up in the capital city with his parents and his younger siblings who were each three years apart - Naheed, Farzaneh, and Shaida. He completed his medical training at the Teheran Medical School where he met his wife-to-be, Rezvan. Hooshang and Rezvan were married on July 16, 1969. Naghmeh, their daughter, was born on August 20, 1970. The family lived for two and half years in Dubai in the United Emirates. Hooshang and Rezvan completed their post graduate/residency training in Tabriz, Iran. Hooshang became a general surgeon and Rezvan an anesthesiologist.
The family moved to Cameroon (Central Africa) in February 1980 and joined Rezvan’s oldest brother Iraj and his family. Navid, their son, was born on November 23, 1980. As a family, they focused their efforts on the unifying power of their Bahai’i faith and beliefs.
Hooshang, Rezvan and Navid joined Naghmeh in Eugene, Oregon in July 1994. Although they both decided not pursue their medical career, they continued to steadily support their children. As Naghmeh and Navid both completed their post graduate education, got married and had children of their own, Hooshang and Rezvan finally moved to Yorba Linda, California in 2018.
As a Baha’i, Hooshang firmly believed in God who is All Powerful, All Knowing and All Wise. He did his best to exemplify the following words attributed to Abdu’l-Baha, the authorized interpreter of Baha’i writings, “When asked on one occasion: “What is a Baha’i?” Abdu’l-Baha replied: “To be a Baha’i simply means to love all the world; to love humanity and try to serve it; to work for universal peace and universal brotherhood.” Although a man of few words, he led by example particularly for his children and grandchildren whom he dearly loved. He was an accomplished and astute physician and often reminded Naghmeh that the practice of medicine should not be based on obtaining labs and imaging! He lent a helping hand to those in need: we now hear from friends how Hooshang had treated their loved ones. Hooshang spent his childhood and adolescence watching his mother make delicious meals. He loved to cook. Without any prompt, he lovingly cooked for his children’s wedding receptions. He cared, truly cared about his family - his wife Revzan, his children, Naghmeh and Navid, his children in law, Larry and Sahar and his grandchildren, Neda, Liya and Kian. He showed this love with his steady and unshakable strength: he was always there and always willing to help us.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018 and was in hospice care from May 2022 until his last breath. His illness first manifested itself with cognitive deficits and dementia. With love, amazing commitment and patience, Rezvan cared for Hooshang at home for the last seven years.
Hooshang passed away in the early morning of Thursday January 23, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones, Rezvan, Naghmeh and Navid as they continued to offer their prayers and their love for the progress of his soul.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider donating to either the American Parkinson Disease Association or the Baha’i Fund (Construction of the Shrine of Abdu’l-Baha).
