Maria was born in a rural town in Mexico in 1932. Opportunities were scarce and her mom was a single parent. So she spent a good portion of her childhood looking after her younger brother whom she carried on her hip while doing chores, even during a quick game of marbles. She claims she beat all the neighborhood boys. Later in life, Maria was married and moved to the U.S. She became a devoted wife and loving mother to two children whom she called her riches. It is possible to turn a house into a home. Maria changed her family's hearts, made them more spacious and sustainable. Even in times of crisis, Maria did not give up on God. In fact, she transformed her pain into piety. Her faith was not abstract. She seemed to live her days in the eye of a violet. God's smallest creations were her sanctuary: a warm smile, a kind word, a lasting touch.
