March 24, 1925 – December 21, 2016
Adele Z. Roth passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 21st. Her granddaughter was singing to her as she rejoined her beloved George (Bob) William Roth.
Adele was born in New York on March 24, 1925 to Italian immigrants, Louis and Margaret Zollo. She was one of nine children. She met Bob on Coney Island and they were married in 1946. In 1948, they boldly moved to California where they would spend the rest of their lives residing in Belmont, Cupertino, and Pleasanton and raise a family of five children.
Adele’s passion and exceptional talent was in the kitchen. She could walk into any kitchen and take the ingredients on hand and turn them into a delicious dish. After her children had left the house, she turned this skill into a career and launched a catering business. When not cooking for brides and grooms, Adele fed everyone else during tax season, ski season, and every holiday. Anyone who came to the house received a to-go package when they left. In December of 2008, Adele became known in the East Bay as the 83-year old lady who bought a MINI Cooper.
She was the matriarch of the family and infused every holiday with fun. Large family gatherings were signature, as was her rendition of “five golden rings” sung during the Twelve Days of Christmas every Christmas Eve. Tribute was paid to her this past Christmas Eve with the children collectively singing her part. She will be greatly missed.
Adele is survived by her loving family: sister Helen, children Bill, Cathy, Noel, Jimmy, and Lynnette, six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. In them, her feisty spirit and zest for life lives on, and hopefully some of her culinary mastery as well.
