Gene and I were high school friends.  The last time we saw each other was June, 2004 at the Gackle, ND Centennial celebration.  We shared stories about our days at GHS, talked about our experiences after high school, and what we were doing at that time.

My sincere sympathy to Gene's family.  I learned of his passing via the hometown weekly newspaper the "Tri-County News."

One veteran to another, brothers forever, rest in peace my friend.

I always enjoyed going to N. Dak. in the summer.  We would always visit the Ammon farm.  Gene and I enjoyed running around and seeing the animals.  Once we caught a garter snake and made the mistake of showing it to our mothers in the kitchen.  Needless to say, it was not a good idea.  Another time he let me shoot his BB gun.  I shot a bird and Gene sadly informed me that it was the N. Dak. state bird.  So many good memories, such a great cousin.  I was proud of his service to his country and the work he did later counseling so many other veterans.  Be at peace Gene.

I am a double cousin. We grew up poor but all loved the very simple things in life. So many memories of getting snowed in at Christmas time and lots of kid’s snuggling in one bed  RIP Eugene 

Jenny, Annalisa and Kay:

Many years ago when the girls were young, Gene invited me to play guitar at the Sunday school gathering at your church, which I believe was on the Alameda.  Gene knew that I did that for our church.  So I played some standard religious kid songs ("He's Got the Whole World in His Hands", "Rise and Shine", things like that.)  Gene would often bring that up in later years.  His favorite part about the event was when I asked the children if they knew where God lived.  One of the children replied "New York City!"  

Gene was my good buddy for decades. He was a complex  man, funny, quick to laugh even when he was the butt of the joke.
He was  a simple farm boy who was drawn into an ugly war. His attitude was: Do the best.
Let the record speak. Twice wounded, twice decorated for bravery in combat.
He took life not quite as seriously as, perhaps he should have. He was quick with a joke but quick to anger because of the scars on his mind. We who knew him well understood and accepted.
He will long live in my memory and that of my family,

Rest in peace, brave soldier.  Semper Fidelis.
