Born in Madeira, Portugal on June 2, 1934. At age 20, he left Madeira to Sao Paulo, Brazil hoping to find more opportunity and a better life for himself. In Brazil, he met the love of his life.
Fernando married Maria Celeste Neto (Martins) on December 26, 1964. They were married for 56 years. In 1970, at age 36, Fernando, his wife and their two young daughters emigrated to America. They settled in Santa Clara, California. Fernando loved the city of Santa Clara, so much so that he lived in “The Mission City” for the next 50 years until his death.
He was a devout Catholic. He loved God and would often say “Jesus is the boss.” Fernando attended Saint Clare Parish for many years. He loved to sing and sang in the Portuguese choir. He served as a Eucharistic Minister by administering the sacraments of holy communion to those who were ill or unable to attend mass.
He loved spending time with his family. The family would often get together for special events and holidays. He loved making “carne de espeto” (Portuguese beef skewers).
Fernando was a hard worker. He worked hard to provide for his family. He retired at the age 65 from LaidLaw Environmental in San Jose, CA, where he worked for many years. He was a great example of strength and perseverance.
He loved spending time in his backyard. He enjoyed planting vegetables and enjoyed eating fruit from his fruit trees. One of his favorite hobbies was caring for his beautiful orchids and keeping them alive for years. While enjoying his orchids, he would often whistle and sing.
Fernando was preceded in death by his father Jose, his mother Maria, and his brothers John, Jose, Antonio and Rafael. Fernando is survived by his wife Maria Celeste, by his two daughters, Valerie and her husband Steve, Ana and her husband Steve, his 3 grandsons, Derek, Bryce and Sean, his 3 sisters, Maria, Conceisao and Bernadette, his brother Manuel, and several nieces and nephews.
His love, kindness, and compassion will never be forgotten. Memories of Fernando will live in the minds and hearts of those who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace dear loved one.
