Jose Rogero, the second of seven children, was born in September 1956, in Terceira, to Jose and Elvira Barcelos. At a young age he started helping his father in the fields and lending his mom and sister a hand with his younger siblings at home. When he was 18, he followed his family to California. He continued supporting his parents and caring for his younger siblings, providing for them, and guiding them on the right paths. After almost two decades, at the age of 36, he decided his birth place in Serreta was where he wanted to live. His religious devotion led him to join the Order of Franciscans in Portugal for several years before returning once again to Serreta. Each year he would alternate between visiting his family in Santa Clara or hosting them for the summer.
Those blessed to meet Jose Rogero knew he was a kind, gentle, and religious man. He graciously extended an open invitation to his home, even friends of family that he hadn’t met before received a warm welcome and the best tours of Terceira. Your tour wouldn’t be complete without a peek at his garden. There was always something to harvest and beautiful flowers to appreciate. He had a big heart with an extra soft spot for animals, often taking in strays. He spoke lovingly of his pets and was happy to share a photo as he described their quirky personalities. Jose Rogero was very connected to nature, he loved watching the sunrise and sunset, and was always ready to go explore and capture majestic scenery in photographs. He was curious, and introspective, an eternal scholar who completed his college degree later in life.
He had a keen eye for detail and liked everything to be just right, his perfectionism was sometimes fodder for family teasing. He enjoyed a good laugh with his siblings and whenever they were all together their laughter would remind them of the joy they shared in their childhood days.
His patience and grit were perfect for his work caring for children with special needs. Whenever he would talk about them it was clear it was more than a job to him. Jose Rogero was a devote catholic and volunteered his time for the church, Nossa Senhora dos Milagres.
Jose Rogero battled cancer for four and a half years and suffered mightily at the end. His departure leaves a void in many hearts, especially his mother Elvira, his siblings Zelia, Manuel, Jacinta, Ema, Luis, and Paul. They are not alone in mourning, his brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and so many more share their sorrow. Jose Rogero is joining his father Jose, grandparents, sister-in-law, aunts, and uncles, in heaven.
The family extends sincere gratitude for those that loved and supported Jose Rogero all his life and for the prayers and encouragement from family and friends near and far away.
Funeral Mass for Jose Rogero will be held at 11:00 am on January 13, 2021 at St Clare’s Church, Santa Clara, CA. Followed by committal service at 12:30 pm at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln St, Santa Clara.
