Maria Freitas Gonsalves

Maria (Mary) Gonsalves of Santa Clara entered into rest on January 26, 2021. Born in New Bedford, MA, January 7, 1925. At the age of 3, along with her parents and younger brother, Augustine, returned to Madeira. She came to the U.S. with her husband Jose (Joe) early 1940s and located in Santa Clara amongst family until her death. Mary was an avid gardener, especially tending to her Tree Roses and Orchids! What beauty she created in her backyard. Mary worked 40+ years at Del Monte Dry Fruit Packing Plant 51 in San Jose until her retirement.

Mary leaves behind her children. Jim Gonsalves, Liz Kern (Larry, deceased) , and Yvonne Correia (Chris). Her Grandchildren: J.C. Gonsalves (Vicky), Cindy Gonsalves (James), Jason Smith (Danielle), Brian Smith (Sandra), Daniel Correia (Jason), Brian Correia, and Alex Correia. Her Great-Grandchildren: Sean Smith (Mari), Marissa Smith, Matthew Smith, B.J. Edwards, Faith Gonsalves, Emily Gonsalves, Nathan Gonsalves, AND Great-Great Grandson, Jax Smith, her littlest pride and joy. Her Godchildren: David Alves, Richard Frietas, Ana Frizado, and Mary Ann Sylvia. Her brother Augustine Frietas, sister-in-law Emedia Freitas and predeceased by her baby brother, Adelino Freitas. And Al Oppio who called her Mom and appreciated her sense of humor. Many nieces and nephews locally and overseas.

Mom is finally out of the pain she suffered for so many years. A life of always giving to her family. Her final wishes were to pass at home, and with the help of Vitas Healthcare, made it possible. A special thank you to Jean, her Caregiver, who had challenges but made it work. Because of COVID, we are limited to family only.
