The thing I will always associate with Bernard Morton, unconditional love.

Bernard Morton was a fighter; the son of a holocaust survivor and a man bred on the streets of New York at a time when you had to fight survive. Through it all he developed his own beliefs and his own values, and then adhered to them until his very last day. Perhaps he was a stubborn man, but he knew what he believed in and he fought for it, a truly admirable quality.

I had the privilege of knowing Bernie for a little over two years. During that time we had a number of great conversations, and when you broached a subject he was passionate about he would find an energy you never knew he had. There was a life to him that you could always spot, even as he battled to maintain his health, day-in and day-out. I never knew the healthy Bernie, I only knew him in the later portion of his battle. But the man I knew loved basketball, and sports, and would never miss a big game. He was a passionate collector, an aficionado of rare coins and fine wines, and a man who demanded excellence from those around him. He would still get to the gym and put in work on the treadmill, or take long walks around Oakwood, and his passion for life could never truly be quelled.

Over the course of our friendship, I watched as he went through a series of peaks and valleys with his health. Some days were great, some days were miserable, but the one constant in his life was David. It's impossible for me to talk about Bernie without talking about David, who devoted a good portion of his life to helping his father. Their relationship was not perfect, far from it at times, but you can never really fracture a son's love for his father and vice versa. Bernie will continue to live on in all of hearts, but he'll also live on through David, who has grown into a hardworking, dedicated, caring, gentleman; a man any father can be proud of. Bernie's legacy carries on through the man who was by his side taking care of him until the end, in one of life's greatest examples of unconditional love.

Rest in peace Bernard Morton, you were, are, and always will be loved.
