

Alice Cora Shankland, 96, of Sarasota, Florida and formerly of Jackson, Michigan, passed away on November 10, 2023. She was born on February 12, 1927, in Lansing, Michigan to Catherine and Ernest Cunningham. Alice was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, known for her kind and generous nature.
Alice had a servant's heart and dedicated herself to her family and friends. She was a kind mother and friend who taught us the value of perseverance. Alice was inquisitive and always eager to learn. She had a passion for reading, sewing, traveling, gardening, and enjoyed her life in Jackson, Michigan and Sarasota, Florida.
Alice attended Eastern High School in Lansing, Michigan, and later pursued higher education at Michigan State University. She had a successful career as an office professional, working in various capacities throughout her life. Alice began her career at the State of Michigan in the capital building. In Jackson she then served as a secretary at Westminster Presbyterian Church and later as a financial secretary at James Butterfield Investments. Finally, she worked as an executive secretary at Dawn Food Products.
Alice was a woman of faith and found solace in her religious community. She worshipped at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Michigan, and more recently at Pine Shores Presbyterian in Sarasota, Florida.
Alice is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Shankland, and her three children, Diane (David) Zuchowski, Delores (William) Kingsbury, and David (Julie) Harper. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Brian (Jodie) Zuchowski, Jeff Zuchowski, Desmond (Helen) Herbert, Jessica (Travis) Daugherty, Kelsey (Chris) Felt, Claire Kingsbury, and ten great-grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and Ernest Cunningham, as well as her siblings, Fay Cunningham, Max Cunningham, and deceased husband Vance Harper.
A memorial to celebrate Alice's life will be planned in February 2024, allowing family and friends to come together and honor her memory. Alice will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her kindness, generosity, and loving spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
