Howard was born on Mapes Avenue in Bronx, New York on April 16, 1935 to David Yegelwell and Sylvia. (nee Goldberg) Yegelwell. A lifelong Yankees fan, Howard followed the Bronx Bombers throughout their epic history to today. Howard was drafted into the Army as an X-Ray Specialist in May 1958, serving two years on Active Duty at the former Army-Navy Hospital in Hot Spring, AR and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. Upon separating from the Army as a Specialist/E-4, Howard backpacked solo through Europe for a summer, until returning to New York City to pursue a career in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine for the next fifty years. Howard received a Good Conduct Medal and an Army Marksmanship Badge (M1 Garand Rifle) for his service. He was Honorably Discharged from the Arm Reserves in April 1964. He belonged to the Jewish War Veterans of Venice, FL.
Working his way up the ladder of Radiology, Howard worked at several New York City and New York City suburban hospitals, as well as Venice Hospital, during his retirement. His highest post was as the Director of Interventional Radiology at New York Hospital, NYC, NY. He also worked as a Radiology Department Administrator at Nyack Hospital, Nyack, NY, and retired from Helen Hays Hospital, Haverstraw, NY.
Howard was a real mensch. He had a unique sense of humor, with a dry wit and loved his grandchildren very much. In addition to his love of baseball, Howard was an avid tennis player (singles then doubles), and regular at the gym. Upon his retirement, Howard changed his diet, picked up his exercise regimen, and returned to his Army Basic Training weight for many years. Howard and his family believe this extended his life for decades.
