Humes McLaughlin Flynn of Venice, FL, formerly of Washingtonville, NY, was born in NYC, New York on August 26, 1915. He passed away peacefully at the age of 105 on November 23rd at Harbor Inn Assisted Living of Venice, FL.
Mr. Flynn was a graduate of Chester High School, Chester, NY and King College, Bristol, TN. He married Marguerite Carpenter of Bristol, VA in 1940 and they had two daughters – Patricia Flynn Ladehoff and Marguerite Flynn Hulver Smiley. Mr. Flynn served four years in the Navy in WWII as a machinist first mate, repairing PT boats in the South Pacific (New Guinea). The founder of Flynn Real Estate in Washingtonville, NY (his motto was: “See Flynn, Move In”), he was a successful broker and developer; president of Orange County Real Estate Board, and MAI real estate appraiser. In the latter capacity, he was engaged in large urban renewal projects. In 1963 Mr. Flynn married Louise Verbert of Chester, NY. The Flynns divided their time between Washingtonville and their home in Barbados. In Barbados Mr. Flynn served on the board of directors of Rose & Laflamme, manufacturer of drink flavors, syrups and jams. At age 97, he began delivering Meals on Wheels in the Venice area. He was a parishioner of Epiphany Cathedral, Venice, FL. Humes’ 100th birthday in 2015 was a grand celebration with friends and family coming from several states and Barbados. The guests enjoyed a luncheon boat cruise on Sarasota Bay, Sarasota, Florida. A very special moment was the cruise caption inviting Humes to steer the boat, a truly memorable experience for an ‘old salt’ to be at the helm!
