It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ann Chobotuk at the remarkable age of 110. Ann was an incredible woman with a great love for family, gardening, cooking, and nature.
Ann was born on January 31, 1916, on the family farm near Alvena, Saskatchewan, and lived a long and full life surrounded by the people and things she loved most. She made her home in Cudworth, Wakaw, and Saskatoon. Her final years were spent in the excellent care of St. Volodymyr’s Villa and Luther Special Care Home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, in 2002; daughter-in-law, Elsie; five brothers; and two sisters.
Left to carry on her beautiful traditions—and attempt to recreate her amazing recipes—are her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren:
Daughter Debra (Peter Wilson), grandson Marc (Christina), great-granddaughters Abigail and Gracie; granddaughter Angeline (Curtis Meagher).
Daughter Mary Ann, grandson Josh (Meadrien Kwong), great-grandchildren Amelia and Jayden; granddaughter Ellie Boyenko (Blair Opperman), great-granddaughters Kinley Ann and Caliea.
Son James (Lorill), granddaughter Alison (Graham Yarwood), great-grandson Bennett; granddaughter Tara (Evan Bianco), great-grandchildren Monty and Violet.
Son Kenneth, grandson Jason (Alan); granddaughter Erin (Jeff Greco), great-granddaughters Madison and Mackenzie.
Ann was a self-taught woman and an early feminist. She played an important role in her community and was a devoted member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League. Her commitment to service and willingness to help others made her someone people could always depend on.
She was a master cook, gardener, and seamstress. Ann grew the most incredible fruits and vegetables, which she happily shared with family and friends. She was a phenomenal cook who believed in a generous spread and never sending anyone away hungry; her pies and breads are legendary. She cooked by instinct, feel, and smell—a skill that could only come from a lifetime of experience and a natural gift in the kitchen.
Ann was a wonderful host who loved bringing people together, whether for family dinners, gatherings with friends, or lively evenings of cards and conversation. She had an adventurous spirit and was always eager to explore new things, whether on a travel adventure, with the latest kitchen gadget, or by trying international cuisine. She had a deep appreciation for nature and was always happy to enjoy a walk, share a picnic, or watch for the latest feathered visitor to one of her bird feeders.
Over her 110 years, Ann witnessed extraordinary changes in the world around her, yet some of life’s simplest pleasures remained her favourites, including a good game of tile rummy or cards with a strong cup of coffee. She was still doing her best to play (and win!) at cards into her final weeks. Ann’s long life was one of independence, generosity, and deep love for her family. From her kitchen to her garden, her love was woven into everything she did and will live on in the traditions and memories of those who loved her.
Ann’s Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on November 1st at Mourning Glory – Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LutherCare Foundation for the Luther Special Care Home’s 2nd Floor Recreation Program.
