February 18, 1933 - October 12, 2021
Anne was a wonderful woman that was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. Our “Gma” as she was called by her grandchildren was an amazing wife, mom, daughter, and friend.
Anne Loch was born on February 18, 1933, on the homestead in Henribourg, Saskatchewan. She was the middle child with two older sisters and two younger brothers. Life on the farm was full of family fun and hard work. As a young woman Anne followed her 2 older sisters to Toronto and secured an administrative job with the Sick Kids Hospital. Due to homesickness she returned to the Prairies where she met the love of her life, Stan Matkowski.
Stan and Anne were married on May 30, 1953, in Prince Albert and started their life together on the farm near Tway, Saskatchewan. In time they made the move to St. Benedict and then eventually built their new home in Wakaw in 1965.
During her time in Wakaw, Anne was a woman beyond her time. She was able to balance a home life with career and at the same time volunteer at Church and community organizations, all the while raising a family and making it look easy.
With her love of being busy, she was able to squeeze in time to curl, golf, make perogies and sew. In addition, she completed a Certificate Correspondence Course through the University of Regina, providing her the opportunity to grow from secretary to Town Administrator at the Wakaw Town Office.
Throughout their marriage, Stan and Anne enjoyed travel, square dancing, bowling and especially their winters in Arizona. Their love of people meant they had many friends and acquaintances across Canada and into the United States.
After Stan’s passing, Anne spent 3 years in Wakaw then relocated to Saskatoon to be near family. Her life in Saskatoon was a continuation of being involved and adding more friends to her growing collection.
Anne was always there for family and showed her untiring support, positive attitude, and of course was up for any road trip. She was present for events from the birth of grandchildren in Scotland, Graduations in Cairo, Egypt and Lethbridge; cheering on Dance, Track, Football and of course Curling events across Canada. Her suitcase included team colours and she loved to host hotel “debriefings” in her room.
She was renowned for her cooking, baking skills and her love of hosting. There was always a reason for family gatherings on holidays, birthdays, or other special occasions and she could somehow make a meal magically appear from out of nothing. We will miss your Perogies, Pickles and Hungarian Walnut Cake.
Anne passed peacefully on October 12, 2021, at the Palliative Care Unit, St. Paul’s Hospital with Ric and Sherry by her side. She is now reunited with her husband Stan, Parents (Sam and Mary Loch), In-Laws (Walter and Josephine Matkowski), Sister (Sophie Penteluk), Brothers (John Loch and Joe Loch), Brother-in-laws (James Welk, Al Penteluk and Melvin Matkowski). She will be sadly missed by her children; Ric (Tracee) Matkowski and their children Brett, James (Megan) and Kayla (Floyd); Sherry (Dean) Kleiter and their children Mackenzi Hus (Jorgen), Rylan (Kalli) and Madison. Her sister Jenny Matkowski; sisters-in-law Cecilia Loch and Ione Loch; numerous nieces, nephews and all the friends Anne touched.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon, SK. The Rite of Committal will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Prince Albert.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Palliative Care Unit (1702 20th Street W, Saskatoon SK S7M 0Z9) or to the Saskatoon Cancer Center (20 Campus Drive Saskatoon, SK S7N 4H4) would be graciously accepted by the family.
Arrangements in care of Travis Minor – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
