Brian William Noonan
September 5, 1945 – February 21, 2018
With profound sadness the family of Brian Noonan announces that Brian passed away peacefully surrounded by family at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon on February 21, 2018 at the age of 72 years. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Elementary and high school education was in Maidstone, Saskatchewan and North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Brian obtained Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1990, Dr. Noonan received his Doctorate in Educational Measurement and Evaluation from the University of Ottawa. Brian joined the Saskatoon Catholic Board of Education in 1966 and remained with the Board until 1997. During his tenure with the Saskatoon Catholic Board of Education, he was teacher, principal, superintendent of research and development and Secretary to the Board. For several years he was a member of the City of Saskatoon’s Municipal Planning Commission.
In 1997, Dr. Noonan began a career in post-secondary education initially with the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Educational Administration for one year, followed by a one-year appointment at the University of Manitoba. The remainder of his teaching and research career was with the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Psychology and Special Education. At the university he continued to pursue his interest in history and in education. Teaching and helping others was his passion. His publications were extensive and he particularly enjoyed collaborative research and writing activities with colleagues and graduate students.
Brian was predeceased by his parents Vernon (1980) and Amanda (2010), and brother-in-law Bill Mokuruk (2004). Brian leaves his loving wife Donna; his brother Dennis (Barb) and children Ken, Krista, and Denine (Danny) and their families; sister Gail (Emmet Medernach) and sons Ian Mokuruk (Michelle) and Darren Mokuruk (Denise) and their families; brother Warren (Jane) and son Cyril (April) and family; brother-in-law Terry (Dianne) Fisher and sons Warren (Kim) and family, and Brad (Shannon) and family. In 1974, Brian married Donna (nee Fisher). Together they enjoyed life, and over the years they loved travelling, family get-togethers, and entertaining their friends; these brought great joy to their lives. Brian was a kind, sensitive and caring person who loved helping others. Brian had a profound influence on his family, friends, colleagues and students; his intelligence and integrity balanced very well with his kindness and sense of humour.
Special appreciation is extended to the dedicated staff at Sherbrooke Community Centre, to the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital, and to Brian’s dedicated and gifted physician, Dr. Andrew Harrington.
