Brian Dennis Joseph Sullivan was born on September 21, 1942, and grew up in Griffintown, an Irish district of Montreal. Brian, or “Sully” , was a one-of-a-kind guy with a magnetic personality that drew people to him, and he loved entertaining everyone with his many stories.
On October 8, 1959, at the age of 18, Brian joined the Navy at HMCS Donnacona, thinking he would stay in for one term of service. That term turned into 29 years in the regular Navy and, after retirement, nine years with the Naval Reserves. Brian’s trades over these years included Communications Supplementary rating (later renamed Radioman Special), Observer’s Mate, Radioman Special (later renamed Communication’s Research), Electronic Warfare Operator, and Electronic Warfare Technician. When the Fire Control and Electronic Warfare trades amalgamated, he became a Naval Electronic Sensor Operator. His tours took him to Alert, in the former NWT, postings on both sides of Canada, secondments to the United States, and travels all over the world. He spent time as a diver, in submarines, in RCN Fleet Trackers, and as a recruiter for the Armed Forces, which brought his family to Saskatchewan. He retired from the service in 1997 as a Petty Officer First Class.
In retirement, Brian and Margaret traveled south to Mesa in the winters where they enjoyed their time in Carriage Manor participating in the varied activities with the many friends they made. During this time, they discovered and enjoyed river cruises, which took them to Europe, Russia, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Brian also was one of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ most ardent and loyal fans.
In more recent years, Brian and Margaret moved to a condo in Warman where Brian became involved with the condo board and enjoyed playing bridge at the Saskatoon Bridge Club.
Brian is survived by his wife Margaret; son James (Lisa), grandsons Liam, Jake and Luka; son Patrick (Michelle), granddaughter Maya; sister-in-law Ella (Kevin) Sullivan; sister-in-law Shirley Kucher; brother-in-law Neil (Noreen) Sutherland; his first wife and mother of his children Carol (née McManus) Sullivan and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Merle, brother Kevin, sister-in-law Noreen Sutherland, brother-in-law Bill Kucher and Brian’s second wife Jeanie (née Mowat) Sullivan.
Brian’s Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63 located at 606 Spadina Crescent West, Saskatoon. Inurnment will take place at Merrington Cemetery near Kindersley at a later date.
