Daniel was born on May 10, 1929 in Taishan, in the Guongdong Province in the People’s Republic of China. He passed away peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on April 22, 2020 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with his devoted wife by his side. Along with the many wonderful staff that looked after him over the ten and a half years he resided at the Parkridge Centre.
Daniel was the youngest of the four children born to Joseph and Loi York Mack. He followed his father’s footsteps and immigrated to Canada in January of 1952. He has called it home ever since.
He was a very active young man and was involved in many sports such as basketball, badminton, volleyball, bowling and soccer. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. It was because of sports that he met the love of his life. While travelling with his high school basketball team, he met his wife of 71 years.
Daniel had a thirst for knowledge and was always eager to learn. He taught himself English after moving to Canada and taught himself how to play the harmonica and violin as well. He did not back down from a challenge, he was well into his seventies when he learned to use the computer. He was a man of many interests and hobbies. Daniel loved the outdoors and photography and travelled in his youth pursuing these passions. He loved working with his hands and did a great deal of woodworking. Later on in life, he fell in love with gardening.
Daniel worked in the restaurant business most of his life, starting his first job in Canada at the Paris Café in Saskatoon. He eventually saved up and started his own business, New China Chop Suey. He retired for the first time in 1984 but that did not sit well as he was a man always on the go. He returned to the industry and worked at St. Paul’s Lunch, Asquith Café and finally the Genesis Family Restaurant before retiring for good. Daniel unfortunately suffered stroke in July of 2009 and spent the years since living at the Parkridge Centre. This took a great toll on his family, especially his dear wife Suey who has spent the last ten years travelling back and forth to be with her husband.
Daniel will be greatly missed by his family and friends as he touched the lives of many people. He was a wonderful family man that spent countless hours volunteering to enrich the lives of the many people fortunate enough to have met him. His overwhelming enthusiasm and tirelessness for helping others made him a true humanitarian and a positive role model. Daniel not only gave his time but often his own resources to help in his community. He was involved in associations that enriched the lives of others. He was president of both the Chinese Benevolent Association and the Mack’s Brotherhood Association, just to name a couple.
Daniel is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Loi York Mack, his oldest brother and sister-in-law Tong Kwong and Yu Chan Mack; his second oldest brother and his oldest sister.
He is survived by his loving wife Suey Jean Mack, sons Eldon (Sue) Mack of Edmonton, AB and Lyndon Mack of Calgary, AB, daughter Evelyn (Brian) Rogoz-Mack of Saskatoon, SK, grandchildren Byron (Tricia) Mack of Saskatoon, SK, Robert (Lan Ly) Mack of Regina, SK, Danielle Mack and Stephan Mack of Calgary, AB, great grandchild Elizabeth Mack of Saskatoon, SK, nephew Kwok Yee (Sara Huang) Mack of Chicago, IL and niece Winnie (Chiu) Ngai of Chicago, IL.
