David was born February 4, 1939, to William and Ethel Evans in Carragana, Saskatchewan. He grew up on the farm with his brother and sisters and spent time working in the vegetable garden and milking cows. David’s father William went to serve in the army in WWII in France and Holland from 1940 to 1944.
David moved to Regina when he was 16, and worked various jobs including at a service station, a dairy farm and driving taxi, to name a few. A family favourite story was delivering milk with “Bill”, his horse. David had Bill so well trained that he was quicker with his horse and wagon than his colleagues with a truck. David always had more than one job going at one time. David started working with PCO in Regina, and that job took him to Saskatoon with his family.
In 1975, David undertook a career change, getting his grades 11 and 12. He then moved to Vancouver for two years to attend BCIT, getting his diploma in Environmental Public Health to become a public health inspector. Following completion of his schooling, his career took him to North Battleford where he worked for 8 years. In 1985, David took a job in Saskatoon with Environmental Health for the federal government. He retired in March of 1995 from the Federal Government and went looking for a business to purchase.
Along with his wife Sandra, they purchased an insurance business in June 1995, changing the name to Evans Insurance. They worked there from 1995 to 2013. During that time, David and Sandra worked hard building the business, also finding time to enjoy outdoor pursuits like camping and canoeing.
They also spent lots of time traveling. A favourite destination was Greece, going back six times. Cruising was another favourite way to see the world, accumulating over 400 days at sea. Their travels took them to Churchill, Manitoba to see polar bears, down the Amazon, to Singapore, Japan and other countries too numerous to mention. Retirement also meant time spent visiting family across Canada.
In addition to traveling, David had a passion for gardening and making his yard a relaxing place for family and nature. He enjoyed growing apples, raspberries, strawberries, grapes and vegetables. David was also a skilled wine maker, and he was very generous sharing his wine.
We have to mention that David had a way of thinking outside of the box. He had a very inventive mind and always had a creative solution to any problem presented to him. He was always curious and interested in a wide variety of topics. He had that wonderful ability to talk to anyone and make you feel like you had known each other forever.
David had a life well lived and will be missed immensely.
David is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sandra; his children: Cathie (John) Sulz, Richard (Constance) Evans, Robert (Michelle) Evans, Kelly (Kim) Norland. His grandchildren: Brittany (Jesus), Michael (Menette), Andrew (Lea), Connor (Laura), Jason (Pia), Brennan (Michele), Britt (Teresa), Josh (Hannah) and Tristan. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren; his sisters Gwen (Don) Webb, Olwen (Wilmer) Kipling; and his faithful companion Penny.
David was predeceased by his parents William and Ethel Evans; his brother and sister-in-law Allan and Phyllis Evans; and his in-laws Marjorie and Clifford Nevins.
