Don passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017 at the age of 87. He is loved and remembered by his dear wife Earla, two sons, Kelly (Shelley) and Garth (Bobbie Jo); three grandchildren, Kathleen ‘Kate’, Robyn and Kyle; Shelley’s family, Carly Russell and Ken Keating, Danna and Caalen Covey and their daughter Freya; sister-in-law Ann Lardner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Augustine and Maud (Holland); two sisters, Irene (Carl) Morphy and Kay (Jim) McDonald; two brothers Ken (Muriel, Mae) and Vincent Lardner. Don was born on November 25th, 1929 in Saskatoon and was raised and educated there. He married Earla Harvey on April 30th, 1956. Last year they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He excelled in his early years playing in three hockey leagues, Saskatoon Jr. Quakers (1948-49 in Sask. Junior), Moose Jaw Canucks (1949-50 in Western Canada Junior) and Sarnia Sailors (1951-52 in Ontario Senior A) to name a few. Don coached elementary school hockey in the 60’s and 70’s including winning several City Championships. In his later years, he played hockey along with other ‘genuine’ seniors at the Schroh arena until 2002. He enjoyed his grandchildren very much. Kyle’s hockey days, Robyn’s horseback riding, and all of Kate’s accomplishments. He was active with Labrador Retrievers, and a Lifetime member of the Saskatoon Retriever Club. He judged at the Amateur National Retriever trials, and competed across Canada on a National level. In his earlier years, he had a business hauling dynamite. For years he ran the White Rose Service station, his “one man show” business on 8th Street. He owned and operated Lardner’s Big T Texaco from 1957-1973 and opened Lardner’s Trailer Sales in 1962. Don retired in 1990. The family extends their gratitude for the care the Samaritan Place staff provided during his stay there. Thanks to Jim, George and the staff from the Cave for their wonderful food and friendship over the years. Special thanks as well to his niece, Doreen Wilson for her caring, help and assistance throughout the years. In respect of Don’s wishes, a small private gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel - Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200
