December 20, 1933 – February 10, 2015
Dorothy touched the lives of many people, from all walks of life. Through her deep faith, her musical talents, her many acts of service and love, she truly made the world a better place. Dorothy was born on the family farm, near Bladworth, SK, the third of seven children of Cecilia and Nicolas Beckie. She received her early education in the one room Briggs School, completed grades 9 – 11 by correspondence, and graduated in 1952 from St. Joseph’s Academy in Forget, SK. In 1953, Dorothy became a novitiate with Our Lady of the Cross, a Catholic order of nuns, and pronounced her final vows in 1960. She studied music and education, obtaining her ARCT in piano in 1962 and a BEd in 1970. She was stationed in Prince Albert, Edmonton and Redvers, teaching music, school and working with young adults with Down’s syndrome. In 1971, Dorothy made the decision to return to lay life, received dispensation for her religious vows, and settled in Saskatoon teaching music to numerous students. Her strong dedication to her faith continued. For many years, she played organ for St. Mary’s choir and was also a parish worker. In 1983, she married Dan Braidek and showed endless love and care for him. Dorothy and Dan enjoyed many years together and their home at 9 Bateman was welcoming to all. In 2005, they moved to Columbian Manor. Throughout her life, Dorothy helped those in need, especially children, immigrant families, the sick and the elderly. Her energy and capacity to give was immense. Even at 81 years of age, she continued to play organ for daily and weekly masses (Columbian Manor, St. Michael’s), funerals and weddings, and entertained at seniors’ homes (Porteous Lodge, St. Anne’s, Samaritan Place). In addition to music, Dorothy had a deep love of nature and would delight in reporting her sightings of the first crocuses blooming, red wing blackbirds, and her favorite, mountain bluebirds. Despite limited financial means, Dorothy supported many charities. In lieu of flowers, please give to a charity of your choice. The family thanks all who have expressed their love and appreciation of Dorothy. As our sister, auntie, step-mom and grandma, she will remain forever in our hearts.
