Ed was born on August 9, 1931, in Cudworth to Ferdinand and Annie Kurtenbach. He lived a full and hardworking life marked by devotion to family, faith, friendship, and the outdoors.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley (Wiebe), who passed away on December 7, 2010; by his son Gerald; and by his grandson Matthew. Even at 94 years old, Ed was proud to still have two surviving siblings: his older brother Joe and his sister Loyola.
Ed leaves behind a large and loving family who will miss him dearly: Murray and Laurianne Tetrault, and Murray’s daughters Kristen (Matthew) Kindt and Hannah Kurtenbach (Austin Goyer); Larry and Jacqui Kurtenbach and their daughter Frances (Chase Rysavy); Gerald’s son Sam (Brenna Champagne); Doug and Cindy Kurtenbach and their children Jimmy and Trisha Kurtenbach and their children Orin and Arber, and Holli (Michael) Van de Sype and great-grandchildren Skylar, Addie, Rosie, and Marlie.
Ed met the love of his life, Shirley Wiebe, and they were married on September 5, 1955. Together they built a life centered around faith, hard work, family gatherings, camping trips, and community. After Shirley’s passing, the family was happy to see Dad eventually embrace many of Mom’s social activities and friendships — proof that it is never too late to expand one’s social calendar.
As a young man, Ed worked wherever opportunity took him. He worked in the nickel mines in Sudbury, skinned whales on the coast of British Columbia, worked at the Wakaw lumber yard, became a talented auto body man, and even gave entrepreneurship a try with a dry-cleaning plant. Eventually, he met his lifelong friend Paul Greening, and together they found their way into the insurance industry.
Ed spent most of his career with Saskatchewan Mutual Insurance as an Agency Marketing Supervisor. The job kept him on the road for many years, but as his boys got older, those work trips occasionally became family adventures involving restaurant meals and motel stays that, to the kids, felt extremely swanky.
Ed loved fixing, rebuilding, buying, and selling vehicles and campers. If it had an engine or needed body work, Dad was interested. In later years, this became something he especially enjoyed sharing with his oldest son Murray.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, camping, and really anything that involved simply being outside. The Kurtenbach family spent countless vacations camping throughout western Canada, creating memories that remain treasured today. In his later years, some of Ed’s happiest times were spent with Murray at the cabin at Wakaw Lake.
Ed was a devoted Roman Catholic and faithfully supported Holy Spirit Parish for many years. His faith remained an important part of his life throughout his 94 years.
More than anything, Ed was dedicated to his family. He made the effort to stay connected with all of his sons and their families no matter where life took them. Whether it meant driving to North Battleford, Melfort, or wherever the RCMP postings carried Larry and Jacqui, Dad always kept in touch and showed up. When he went to Melfort it was to visit Doug, Cindy and all the kids; but it also meant maybe buying one more new car. In his final years, Murray became his constant companion and mainstay, and the family is deeply grateful for the care, friendship, and daily time they shared together.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Pl, Saskatoon), followed by a light lunch. Interment will take place afterward at St. John’s Columbarium, where Dad will finally be reunited with Mom. Interment will be for immediate family only.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Glengarda Hospice for the care and kindness shown to Ed in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Glengarda Hospice.
