Edward Frank McMartin

Edward was born in Saskatoon on October 14, 1936, to Adam Streicher and Annie Yurchak. Sadly, he lost both of his parents at a young age. Years later, Edward was adopted by Earl and Martha McMartin, who became an important part of Edward’s life and helped him reconnect with his Streicher family.

The McMartins lived on a farm near Elfros, where Edward soon discovered that farming was perhaps not his calling. He instead found his way to the Hudson’s Bay Company, working with the Northern Stores. It was during his time in Buffalo Narrows that he met Karen, who would become the love of his life. They married on September 29, 1961, and shared 65 years of marriage together.

Edward and Karen welcomed their son, Edward Jr., in 1962, followed by their daughter, Laura, in 1967. In 1975, the family moved to Saskatoon, where Edward began working for an accounting firm as an accounting technician. He continued in that role until his retirement in 2001.

Retirement gave Ed a new and very special role: helping raise his granddaughter, Sarah. He was a role model for work ethic and took great pride in sharing his many interests with his grandchildren. From coin collecting and reading to video games, he was always happy to share his hobbies and spend time with his family. Some of the most memorable moments were the simple ones, including evenings spent playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with Sarah and Laura.

Edward was a man of many interests and talents. He enjoyed lawn bowling, curling, and golfing, and was always ready to lend a hand as a handyman. He took great pride in his garden and had a remarkable talent for cross-stitch, creating many beautiful pieces over the years.

Edward had a lifelong love of reading, and his home library reflected this passion. He took great pride in his extensive, carefully categorized collection of books. He also loved music, with ABBA and Boney M.’s Christmas album among his favourites. Edward found joy in the things he loved and was always willing to share them with those around him.

Ed and Karen were also active members of the CARG Program in Saskatoon for 25 years and attended Holy Trinity Anglican Church for many of their years in Saskatoon.

Edward was predeceased by his birth parents; his adoptive parents; his siblings, Edith, Phyllis, and Kathy; as well as his McMartin siblings.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Karen McMartin (Madsen); his brother Albert (Agnes) Jones; his son Edward Jr. (Patricia) McMartin; his daughter Laura Krawec; his grandchildren Sarah (Travis) Gryba, Kathryn McMartin, and Jared McMartin; and his great-granddaughters Prairie and Hunter Gryba.

Edward will be remembered for his strength, his quiet kindness, his many practical talents, his love of family, and the life he built alongside Karen. He leaves behind a family who will carry his memory with them and who are grateful for the nearly 90 years of life he shared with them.
